Why Bet on Atlanta?

Freddie Freeman came up only a single short of the cycle in Sunday’s Game 2 win over Philadelphia in a doubleheader. His homer was an opposite field shot off of Spencer Howard to score two. He would later double in a run in the sixth, and came around to score after his three-bagger in the eighth. After struggling in the early part of August, Freeman is performing up to the level of his expectations.

Ronald Acuna Jr. went 4-for-4 in that game with two homers. He also homered in Game 1 to become the first Braves player with three home runs in a doubleheader since August 7, 1990, when David Justice accomplished the feat (Matt Kemp is the last Braves player with three home runs in a single day, hitting three on April 29, 2017 at Milwaukee). In nine games this month entering this week, Acuna has gone 12-for-31 (.387), reaching base safely in 20-of-39 (.513) plate appearances. He has more walks (8) than strikeouts (7).

The Atlanta bullpen has an MLB-high eight wins, and the Braves have not lost a game in which a reliever entered with a lead. Mark Melancon has a 12.1-inning scoreless streak, the second longest active run in the majors.

It’s right-hander Touki Toussaint (0-0, 6.08) on the mound for the Braves. Toussaint fanned nine while allowing three runs in 6 2/3 innings Thursday against the Blue Jays. It was one run through six innings. Toussaint gave up a single and a double to start the seventh, but manager Brian Snitker left him in and he got the next two batters to ground out, scoring one run. Toussaint was not given the chance to finish the inning as Snitker replaced him with Tyler Matzek. Matzek gave up the tying hit, erasing Toussaint’s chances of winning. The Braves did end up prevailing in nine.

Making his second start of the season, Toussaint reached career highs in both innings pitched (6.2) and strikeouts (nine). The 24-year-old gave up a solo home run to Bo Bichette in the fourth frame and did not issue any walks. Despite a shaky first appearance in relief this season during which he was roughed up for six runs over 2.2 innings, Toussaint has been solid in both starts so far.

This will be Toussaint’s first ever outing vs. the Yankees.

Why Bet on NY Yankees?

The Yanks continue to lead the AL East and are the only team as of Monday with a winning record in it. They did lose three of four this past weekend at Tampa Bay, though.  Closer Zack Britton allowed a run and was charged with the loss in his appearance against the Rays on Sunday.

Britton came in to pitch in a tie game in the ninth, and he allowed a double to Mike Brosseau to lead off the inning. While the left-hander was able to get Brosseau out on a fielder’s choice at third, he also issued a walk and another fielder’s choice, and with runners on second-and-third, he allowed a two-out single to Michael Perez to pick up the loss.

The Yanks will call up one-time touted outfield prospect Clint Frazier before this game. Frazier will essentially replace the injured Giancarlo Stanton (hamstring) on the roster. Stanton was to have an MRI on Monday, at which point the team will have a better idea as to how much time he might miss.

It’s lefty Jordan Montgomery (1-1, 5.59) on the mound. Due to a pair of off days for the Yankees this week, Montgomery wasn’t expected to start again until the weekend, but he’ll be slotted in for the team’s series opener on normal rest.

Montgomery will attempt to bounce back after he allowed five runs over four innings in his last start. is 95 total pitch count was a bit much for just four innings of starting play. The Yankees quickly had to move on to David Hale and Jonathan Holder to finish off the game.

“Curveball wasn’t there. I hung one to [J.T.] Realmuto that really hurt me. That set the tone for the game,’’ Montgomery said of a 1-2 breaking ball the Phillies’ catcher swatted over the left-field wall for a three-run home run with one out in the first inning.

J.A. Happ was initially scheduled to start Tuesday, and it’s unclear whether he’ll move to Montgomery’s old spot in the rotation or if he’ll lose his job as a starter due to several rough performances to begin the year.
