There’s no opening line here because it’s not clear if Memphis star point guard Mike Conley will play. He didn’t on Monday vs. the Warriors. Conley has been dealing with the sore hamstring in recent games but had been a fixture in the Grizzlies starting lineup. Shelvin Mack started for him vs. Golden State, which rolled to a 110-93 victory, Memphis’ third straight loss. Conley is one of four players currently leading an NBA franchise in games played, threes made, assists and steals (LeBron James, Cleveland; Reggie Miller, Indiana; John Stockton, Utah). In his last five games against Portland, Mike Conley has averaged 20.6 points, 3.2 rebounds, 6.4 assists, and 1.40 steals. The Grizzlies are 7-3 in their last 10 games at Moda Center that Conley has played in. Mack scored eight points, adding four rebounds, four assists, one triple, and two turnovers in 26 minutes in the loss. Kyle Anderson (left ankle sprain) returned from a one-game absence on Monday vs. the Warriors, scoring 14 points with five rebounds and one assist. Omri Casspi scored a season-high 20 points. Golden State’s Steph Curry had 20 points and became just the fifth player in Warriors history to score 15,000 points during the regular season — joining the company of Wilt Chamberlain, Rick Barry, Paul Arizin and Chris Mullin. Memphis has scored under 100 points eight times in nine games during the month of December and has been held to double digits in six straight, the Grizzlies’ longest such streak of the season. Damian Lillard, who missed Sunday’s practice for personal reasons, lit up the Clippers for 39 points, six assists, three rebounds, two steals, and six 3-pointers in 36 minutes. Lillard’s in the midst of one of his best stretches of the season as over the last five games he’s averaging 27.8 points, 4.4 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.2 steals and 3.6 3-pointers per game, shooting 48.3% from the field and 58.3% from three. Lillard is shooting 88.9% from the free throw line this season (200-of-225), which is the 12th-best mark in the league. Lillard is fourth in the league in free throws made (Embiid, 244) and is eighth in attempts (Embiid, 308).
C.J. McCollum shot 11-of-19 from the field and 3-of-3 from the foul line in Monday’s win over the Clippers, scoring 27 points with three rebounds, three assists, one blocked shot and two 3-pointers. Over the last five games, he is averaging 24.6 points, 3.4 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.8 three-pointers per game, shooting 51.0% from the field and 34.6% from three. McCollum is one of three NBA players who has made at least 16 field goals in multiple games this season (Davis/Durant).
Jusuf Nurkic shot 8-of-12 from the field and 4-of-6 from the foul line Monday, finishing with 20 points, seven rebounds, two steals and one blocked shot. The 7-footer managed to snap out of a three-game funk in which he scored a total of 28 points on 8-of-39 shooting from the field.
