The teams have played just once – they do again Wednesday – and the Hawks won 116-100 at Washington on Jan. 29. Trae Young had 41 points to lead Atlanta. Young scored 18 in the fourth quarter to hold off a comeback by Washington, which trailed by as many as 23 in the third but got within 10 in the final period. Both Russell Westbrook and Bradley Beal 26 points for the Wizards; Westbrook was ejected in the fourth quarter. There were nine technical fouls called overall and three ejections.

The Wizards have played back-to-back OT games on the road and won both. It was 133-132 at Indiana on Saturday. Bradley Beal scored a game-high 50 points to temporarily retake the NBA scoring lead. It was Beal’s fifth 50-point game of his career. Beal has scored at least 1,700 points for a fifth straight season, the longest streak in team history and second behind Elvin Hayes’ total of six seasons overall.

Beal has also tallied his third season with at least 1,800 points, tied for the second-most in franchise history. Beal could also become just the sixth player since the NBA-ABA merger to average 30+ points in back-to-back seasons (Adrian Dantley, Michael Jordan seven straight, Allen Iverson twice, Kobe Bryant, James Harden three straight).

However, Beal tweaked his hamstring at the end of Saturday’s game and he will not play Monday at least. An MRI revealed the ‘minor’ strain and he’s day-to-day. Hamstring injuries often demand rest, but the Wizards are also balancing their pursuit of the No. 8 seed. After Monday, the Wizards will have three games left in the regular season.

Russell Westbrook was brilliant with 33 points, 19 rebounds and 15 assists. Westbrook tied Oscar Robertson with his 181st career triple-double and it seems inevitable that he’ll eclipse that record before the season’s end, as he’s gone off for triple-doubles in 19 of his last 24 games. Westbrook also passed Rod Strickland for 12th on the all-time assist leaderboard, and his 10th career triple-double against the Pacers are officially the most against any franchise.

Washington won last season’s series against Atlanta 2-1, the first time the two teams met fewer than four times since the 2011-12 season. Washington has not lost the season series since the 2014-15 season, earning splits in three of the last five seasons. Washington’s next win in the series will be its 150th against the Hawks, the first team Washington will reach 150 wins against.

Bit of unusual scheduling for the Hawks as they have been off since a 133-126 loss at Indiana last Thursday. The Hawks missed a pair of 3-pointers that could have tied the game before the Pacers pulled away. Hawks coach Nate McMillan lamented his team being outscored 70-58 inside and trailing by as many as 18 in the third quarter.

“They were living in our paint all night long,” McMillan said. “We didn’t get stops the first three quarters.”

Trae Young led the Hawks with 30 points and 10 assists. The 22-year-old now has 30 30-plus point games this season. John Collins had 25 points and seven rebounds. He’s averaging a serviceable 15.3 points, 6.5 rebounds and 0.6 blocks over his last 12 games. Bojan Bogdanovic added 28 points. He’s averaging 21.0 points, 5.0 three-pointers, 4.0 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals over his last four games. Bogdanovic is having a stellar season in his first year in Atlanta, averaging career highs in points, rebounds, three-pointers and blocks.

Swingman Tony Snell (right Achilles soreness) is being listed as questionable for Monday’s game. De’Andre Hunter (right knee) is being listed as questionable as well. Hunter recently got through a full-contact, 5-on-5 practice, but he’s likely headed for a game-time call. If he is cleared, he’ll likely have some heavy restrictions. Hunter has been out since late March.

The Hawks have won seven consecutive home games, their second streak of seven wins at State Farm Arena this season (seven in a row from 2/21-4/6). During the current seven-game stretch, Atlanta is averaging 119.4 points per game on .505 FG% and .406 3FG%. Atlanta is 15-2 over the last 17 contests played at home.

Atlanta’s 37-31 record is the franchise’s best through 68 games and the latest the club has been six games over .500 since 2016-17, matching the 37-31 mark those Hawks compiled after 68 contests. The Hawks will finish the regular season with a winning record for the first time since 2016-17 (43-39).
