Can the Chiefs Repeat as NFL Champion?

2021 Super Bowl LV

  • When: Sunday, Feb. 7, 2021
  • Where: Raymond James Stadium, Tampa, FL

Reasons KC Chiefs will repeat

The best quarterback in the NFL plays for the Kansas City Chiefs. Patrick Mahomes dominates in a way that few quarterbacks can. Even his future hall of fame peers like Tom Brady and Drew Brees, didn’t dominate the way Mahomes does.

The reason? Patrick isn’t a pocket-passer first. He’s also not a run first quarterback. What Mahomes can do that no other quarterback has ever done before is throw accurately while running.

That makes it almost impossible to stop him because wide receivers like Tyreek Hill and tight-end Travis Kelce can stutter step, make a cut, or go right by defenders. Mahomes will throw a perfectly timed pass.

That’s how Kansas City wins football games. Andy Reid designs plays around Mahomes’ ability to throw accurately while running to a sideline.

Yes, the Chiefs have other good players. But let’s not kid ourselves. The reason KC can repeat is because Patrick Mahomes is, well, Patrick Mahomes.

Reasons KC Chiefs won’t repeat

Who’s to say Mahomes doesn’t get hurt? Also, Patrick can have a bad game.

In the Super Bowl, San Francisco 49ers had Patrick and KC on the ropes. The Niners picked Mahomes off twice. The game was under control until Kansas City decided to rush Jimmy Garoppolo.

Instead of countering the rush with draws, the 49ers continued calling the same offensive plays. It was as if they were afraid Jimmy couldn’t switch things up.

That’s what sparked the KC comeback. Mahomes got some confidence, started to play within himself, and the rest is history.

Also, the Chiefs’ defense ranked eight against the pass but twenty-sixth against the rush. KC allowed 128.2 rushing yards per last season.

The defense won’t be much better in 2020. So if Mahomes gets injured or just doesn’t play as well, Kansas City won’t win the Super Bowl.

Are the current odds on the Kansas City Chiefs at +600 fair?

This is already a crazy NFL Season. The league canceled pre-season games, which means coaches must decide on rosters without having seen players in game-like situations.

That could lead to all sorts of issues for any NFL team. Also, if players must sit on the sidelines for two weeks due to Covid positives, that could lead to massive changes in Super Bowl odds.

It doesn’t mean the Chiefs won’t win the Super Bowl. Because they’ve got the best player at the most important position on the field, and it isn’t even close, the Kansas City Chiefs have a great chance of going back-to-back.

However, at +600, the odds are underlaid. San Francisco’s odds are +850. The Chiefs aren’t +250 better than the San Francisco 49ers. So, we should consider backing the Chiefs once they offer +750 odds or higher.

Wait for KC’s odds to rise before backing them to win the 2021 Super Bowl.

Fair odds on Kansas City Chiefs to win Super Bowl LV: +750
