The New Orleans Saints come out of their bye week expecting several starters back from injury when they visit the Seattle Seahawks on Monday to conclude Week 7 around the NFL. The Saints are favored on the NFL odds as the Seahawks again are without Russell Wilson.

Series History

New Orleans leads 8-6 and has won four of the past five. They last played Week 3 in 2019 and New Orleans won 33-27 in Seattle. Saints running back Alvin Kamara caught nine passes for a team-high 92 yards, including a 29-yard touchdown on a screen pass that saw him break several tackles. He also rushed for 69 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries, with a lot of that yardage coming after contact. Teddy Bridgewater threw for two scores. Russell Wilson threw for two and rushed for two for Seattle. The Saints led 27-7 going into the fourth quarter, and the Seahawks scored a handful of garbage-time touchdowns.

Why Bet on New Orleans?

The Saints come out of their bye at 3-2 following a 33-22 win at Washington in Week 5. Over the last 10 seasons (2011-20), New Orleans is 7-3 in games after bye weeks, tied for the best record in the NFL. The Seahawks are 4-2 over the previous five seasons (2016-20) against opponents coming off bye weeks.

Several guys who have been out injured, led by Pro Bowl left tackle Terron Armstead, are expected to return for this one. However, star receiver and former NFL Offensive Player of the Year Michael Thomas won’t be one of them. He has been out of the lineup after a June ankle surgery to repair the torn ligaments from Week 1 in the 2020 season.

After five games, the Saints were ranked 31st in passing yards (169.4 yards/gm) and ranked 9th (125.8 yds/gm) in rushing yards. The 13th-ranked 2007 New Orleans Saints offense was the lowest-ranked unit in the Sean Payton era. The 2005 Saints were the lowest-ranked at No. 31 for the entire season, and Mike Ditka’s 1997 team was ranked 30th.

That said, QB Jameis Winston having played his most productive game in Week 5 in terms of passing yards as a Saint. Winston threw for 279 yards, and four touchdowns, against Washington. The Seahawks present one of the league’s more inviting targets as a pass defense. Opponents are averaging 292 passing yards per game, completing 68 percent of their passes, and have thrown 10 touchdowns with just two interceptions against Seattle.

Winston has 12 TDs and three picks. Before this season, his highest touchdown total through his first five starts of a season had been 11, in 2019, and his lowest interception total had been three, in ’17. He’d never had a 4-to-1 touchdowns-to-interceptions ratio before this year; the best was 2.3-to-1, in ’17 (seven touchdowns, three interceptions). One of Winston’s top targets, wideout Deonte Harris, is expected to sit with a hamstring injury.

Why Bet on Seattle?

The Seahawks remain without star QB Russell Wilson due to finger surgery. They lost 23-20 in OT at Pittsburgh last week with Geno Smith under center. Smith completed 23-of-32 passes for 209 yards and a touchdown. Smith was strip-sacked by T.J. Watt halfway through overtime, which directly led to the winning Steelers field goal.

Alex Collins rushed for 101 yards and a TD. He missed most of practice last week but will play. Collins’ official game status is “questionable,” but coach Pete Carroll declared Collins “ready to go” after he got in a limited session on Saturday. Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said there was no timetable for top RB Chris Carson’s (neck, injured reserve) return.

If Collins isn’t at 100 percent, the Seahawks won’t necessarily have to lean on him as much as they have the last two weeks, because Rashaad Penny is expected to be activated from injured reserve ahead of Monday’s game.

Left guard Damien Lewis, who left last week’s game with a shoulder injury, was limited in practice Saturday and will be a game-day decision.

If Smith were to get hurt Monday, his new backup is Jacob Eason. The Seahawks claimed him off waivers this week from the Colts. Seattle was forced to call up Jake Luton from the practice squad for their Week 6 matchup with the Steelers. Luton can only be elevated one more time. He would count against the 53-man roster if brought up a third time. The Seahawks 22ndranked offense ranks fourth in the NFL with a 75.0% scoring rate inside the 20.

Since 2010, Seattle is 33101 overall in primetime, and holds an 112 record on Monday Night Football, including victories in its last four appearances. Overall, Seattle’s .730 winning percentage (2710 record) on Mondays is tops in NFL history. The Seahawks are 196 at home and have outscored opponents 435253 in their last 17 Monday night appearances, including three shutouts
