The teams played last year in New Jersey as well and the Giants won 25-3. New York QB Daniel Jones threw a 5-yard TD pass and made a spectacular one-handed 16-yard catch on the game’s only meaningful touchdown drive. Jones, who finished 23 of 33 for 203 yards with six carries for 30 yards, didn’t remember ever catching a pass in college. Graham Gano kicked field goals of 49, 53 and 44 yards against his former team. The Panthers had just 173 yards. Sam Darnold was the starting QB then.

Carolina leads the all-time series 7-5.

Why Bet on Carolina?

The Panthers were 26-24 home losers to Cleveland in Week 1. Cade York kicked a 58-yard field goal with 8 seconds left in his NFL debut. Former Browns QB Baker Mayfield had led the Panthers back from a 13-point fourth quarter deficit with a 7-yard touchdown run, a 75-yard TD strike to Robbie Anderson and by moving his team 64 yards in seven plays to set up Eddy Pineiro’s go-ahead field goal with 1:13 remaining.

Mayfield completed 16-of-27 passes for 235 yards, one touchdown, an interception and added a rushing touchdown. Mayfield and the Panthers’ offense got off to a horrid start. He started off 5-of-15 passing and coupled that with a bad interception and a lost fumble. A 50-yard completion to Ian Thomas right before the half got the Panthers back in the game.

Panthers head coach Matt Rhule said that over the final 35 minutes of the game, they averaged 7.7 yards per play. That’s good. But the other 25 minutes count too, and the Panthers gained 21 yards on their first 20 snaps, and that was hard to overcome.

Christian McCaffrey rushed 10 times for 33 yards and a touchdown, adding four receptions for an additional 24 yards. Panthers OC Ben McAdoo said, “We’ve got to get the ball in his hands” as clearly 14 touches are not enough.

Rhule said Wednesday that running back Chuba Hubbard will take over as the team’s primary kickoff returner while Andre Roberts (knee) is on injured reserve. Roberts was diagnosed with a PCL sprain and will be forced to miss at least four games. He returned kicks and punts throughout Sunday’s game, with a punt return for 10 yards and two kickoff returns for 35 yards and has been one of the most productive returners in a generation, as Roberts has been to three Pro Bowls and was named All-Pro three times. Hubbard returned one kick for 21 yards as a rookie in 2021.

Carolina in Week 1 ran its streak of holding opponents out of the end zone on the opening drive to 18 games. The franchise record is 28 games, set in 2005-06.

Why Bet on New York?

New Giants coach Brian Daboll’s act of aggression ended up paying off for the Giants in Week 1, with running back Saquon Barkley converting on a 2-pointer to give his team a 21-20 win over the Titans in Week 1. Barkley had to break a tackle attempt in the backfield, while the Titans drove downfield and got in position for a 46-yard field goal, only for kicker Randy Bullock to pull his game-winning attempt wide. New York had dropped 10 of its previous 11 openers.

The Giants’ 238 total rushing yards in Week 1 paced the NFL, led by the league’s top-performing running back in kickoff weekend – Saquon Barkley. He carried the ball 18 times for 164 yards and a touchdown while catching six of seven targets for 30 yards and the winning two-point conversion. Coming out of halftime down 13-0, the Giants opened the third quarter with Barkley’s 68-yard rush. The rush marked an improvement from last year, as the play went 14 yards further than any of the Giants’ plays from all last season.

“I kind of started to get into the zone (after that play), started locking in,” Barkley said. “I kind of love being in that place. I’ve got to try to find a way to get in that place a little bit more and a little quicker.”

The 25-year-old appeared to be back in the elite form he flashed as a rookie, posting his best single-game rushing total since Week 16 of 2019. Barkley was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week. With Shane Lemieux on injured reserve, Ben Bredeson and Josh Ezeudu have been competing for playing time at left guard. The two split snaps almost evenly in Week 1, with Bredeson on the field for 33 snaps and Ezeudu for 29. QB Daniel Jones completed 17-of-21 passes for 188 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

The Giants recorded big hits against two-time Pro Bowler Derrick Henry throughout the contest and stymied the league’s top rusher two seasons ago to 82 yards on 21 attempts, averaging 3.9 yards per carry. New York kept the Titans from getting too many chunk plays off, as Tennessee’s longest play from scrimmage went for 31 yards.

Daboll announced Wednesday that starting outside cornerback Aaron Robinson will miss the Carolina game after having his appendix removed. Robinson received with the third-highest overall PFF grade on the Giants defense in Week 1. His 73.4 mark also ranked 11th among all cornerbacks, while his 72.4 coverage grade ranked 15th.
