Last Meeting

This will be the Ravens’ first-ever game in Los Angeles. They last played the Chargers in 2015 and won 29-26. Justin Tucker hit a 39-year field goal on the final play. Tucker’s fifth field goal came three plays after a third-down pass interference call against Steve Williams moved the ball 21 yards to the San Diego 22. Joe Flacco threw for 319 yards and ran for a score. Philip Rivers went 28 for 37 for 301 yards. Two of his touchdown passes went to Malcolm Floyd, including a 70-yarder.

Why Bet on Baltimore?

The Ravens were 20-12 winners over Tampa Bay last week. Lamar Jackson completed 14-of-23 passes for 131 yards and a touchdown in Week 15. Jackson did damage on the ground, too, rushing for 95 yards on 18 carries. His touchdown was a jet sweep from five yards out. Jackson scrambled for a career-high 48 yards after only totaling 35 such yards all season. Gus Edwards rushed 19 times for 104 yards and a touchdown. Edwards had just 23 yards at halftime.

The Ravens ran for 242 yards, which was 1 yard more than what the Buccaneers produced in total offense (241). Baltimore became the first team to gain over 190 yards rushing in five consecutive games since the 1976 Pittsburgh Steelers did so with Franco Harris and Rocky Bleier.

John Harbaugh on getting accustomed to Jackson’s running: “I don’t know — everybody can have their own feelings on the nerves. But it’s good. I know from a defensive perspective, it’s tough. I just think that’s a very valuable thing to have.”

Jackson has run the ball 86 times, which is more than double the number of carries any other quarterback has since Week 11. The downside is Jackson has taken contact 82 times, which is 31 more than any other quarterback. Baltimore has been the NFL’s top rushing team since Jackson became the starting quarterback five games ago. At the start of Week 11, Baltimore ranked 27th in the league in rushing averaging 92.7 yards per game. In just five weeks, the Ravens have jumped 25 spots to second in the league in rushing, averaging 141.9 yards per game, second only to the Seattle Seahawks (154.9).

The Ravens likely have to reach 10 wins to either win the division or secure a wild-card berth, given the remaining schedules of the Steelers and the two other teams with an 8-6 record in the AFC (the Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee Titans).

Why Bet on LA Chargers?

The Bolts are tied for the NFL’s best record at 11-3 but right now would be an AFC wild-card team because they lose a tiebreaker for the AFC West title with fellow 11-3 team Kansas City. The Bolts staged an amazing rally last Thursday, down 14 points three different times, in winning 29-28 at Kansas City to clinch a playoff spot.

Philip Rivers completed 26-of-38 passes for 313 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. The Chargers went down 28-14 with 8:15 remaining but rallied to stun the Chiefs. Rivers connected with Mike Williams with 4 seconds remaining and the Bolts went for two instead of kicking the extra point. Williams was then left all alone to catch the game-sealing conversion. Rivers’ night got off to a nightmarish start, as he tossed a ghastly pair of first-half picks.

Ravens at Chargers is one of the best NFL Week 16 games.

Williams caught 7-of-9 targets for 76 yards and two touchdowns, adding a 19-yard touchdown rush and game-sealing two-point conversion. He almost single-handedly willed the Chargers to victory after Keenan Allen was lost for the night with a hip injury in the first half. As a result, he now ranks fourth in the NFL in total touchdowns for a wideout trailing only Antonio Brown, Tyreek Hill, and Davante Adams, who all have 12. Williams was only the third wide receiver in team history and first since Tim Dwight in 2002, who also did it vs. the Chiefs, to post a receiving and rushing touchdown in the same game.

Will Allen play this week? He reportedly did not suffer any structural damage after coming down hard on his hip. With the Chargers squarely in the mix for the No. 1 seed, it is likely Allen is pushed to play if he is anywhere close to 100 percent.

Top running back Melvin Gordon has missed the past three game with a knee injury but is looking good to play. Fellow tailback Austin Ekeler (neck, concussion) remains in the concussion protocol. Tight end Hunter Henry (ACL, PUP) returned to Chargers practice on Monday. Henry remains on the reserve/PUP list, but there is a possibility the Chargers could get him back for the playoffs.
