2022 NFL Week 1 Betting Analysis: Jacksonville Jaguars at Washington Odds and Prediction

The Jacksonville Jaguars are looking forward to moving on from the 2021 season. The Urban Meyer experiment was a disaster, and the morale throughout the whole organization was terrible. Meyer didn’t make it through the season, but even after he left, things weren’t the way the Jags had hoped they would be.

Fast forward to 2022, and the Jaguars have a new outlook on life. Super Bowl-winning head coach Doug Pederson is now in charge. He has a history of making quarterbacks into superstars, so Trevor Lawrence is primed for a great season. The Jags signed a lot of free agents, so things are headed in the right direction in Jacksonville.

The Washington Commanders will always have the shadow of Daniel Snyder lurking. Carson Wentz was acquired to be the starting quarterback. This will be his third team in the last three seasons. Things haven’t started off well for the Commanders as their anticipated starting running back, Brian Robinson, was shot twice last week in an attempted carjacking.

Both of these teams will be looking for a fresh start when they meet in their season opener in Andover on Sunday. That being said, it’s time to take a closer look at the upcoming match between Jaguars and Commanders, so you can bet against their NFL Odds.

NFL Betting Preview of the Jacksonville Jaguars versus Washington Commanders Week 1 Matchup

Washington Commanders

The Commanders offense is a work in progress, but the defense should be stellar when at full strength. Unfortunately, star defensive end Chase Young will miss the first few weeks of the season. The defense will still be strong, but it won’t be the same without Young.

With Wentz under center, he should rely heavily on Terry McLaurin. Antonio Gibson will probably start in the backfield, but this offense is void of stars. The offensive line could be an issue as well. If Washington doesn’t get off to a good start this season, Ron Rivera could be on the hot seat.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Jacksonville is looking for big things from Lawrence. They paid big free agent money to Christian Kirk to be the lead receiver. James Robinson and a healthy Travis Etienne will man the backfield. The offensive line should be improved, but it still could be a weakness. This offense could be successful under the tutelage of Pederson.

Defensively, the Jaguars made strides towards the end of last season. This isn’t one of the league’s top defenses, but with some of the young players getting more experience, this could be a decent group. We’re not ready to move them into the upper echelon of defenses, but they could be ok.

Prediction

Washington enters this Week 1 affair as a 3.5-point favorite. Having the advantage of playing at FedEx field could be big for Washington. While we’re still not sold on Carson Wentz as a starting quarterback, we still think this offense could be adequate. The Washington defense should give the Jags some issues.

As for Jacksonville, we think Lawrence will have a very good season. Jacksonville spent a lot of money in the offseason, so we’ll get to see if that paid off.

We’re going to disagree with the oddsmakers, and we’re going to pick the Jacksonville Jaguars to beat the Washington Commanders. This won’t be a high-scoring affair, but the Jags will score late to ruin the debut of Wentz.
