Best NHL Betting Matchups & Picks of the Week – October 16th

Written by on October 16, 2017

The NHL season is a long hard grind, and while what teams do in October may not seem that important, it’s always good to get the season off to a positive start. There are a couple of surprise teams through the first couple of weeks of the season, with the Las Vegas Black Knights, a team playing in their inaugural NHL season, perhaps being the biggest of all. It is going to be interesting to watch their progress as the season goes on, but we will be keeping a close eye on all the teams as we continue to keep trying to deliver winners for those of you who love the NHL Betting action.

With that in mind, take a look at the NHL Odds and this week’s games that worth spending some of your betting dollars on.

Best NHL Betting Matchups & Picks of the Week – October 16th

Tampa Bay Lightning vs. Detroit Red Wings – Monday

This is the only game on the NHL calendar on Monday night, but it’s a good one. There is a bit of a logjam atop the Atlantic Division, with no less than four teams all sitting on 8 points through the opening 5 games of the season. Tampa Bay and Detroit are both in that group, so a win here would help create a little bit of separation. Detroit has won their only home game of the season, while the Lightning has lost their lone road game, which suggests that the Red Wings might be the pick here.

Pittsburgh Penguins vs. New York Rangers – Tuesday

The Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins are off to a bit of an up and down start this season, but their opening batch of games have certainly been more successful than what the Rangers have delivered. Tough as it may seem to believe, the New York Rangers have just 1 win from their first 6 games and are firmly rooted in the cellar of the Metropolitan Division. Can they get things moving in the right direction at home to the Penguins?

Latest NHL Betting Trends

  • Penguins are 3-6 ATS in their last 9 games on the road
  • Penguins are 2-5 SU in their last 7 games on the road
  • The total has gone OVER in 4 of Pittsburgh’s last 6 games
  • Rangers are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 games
  • Rangers are 1-7 SU in their last 8 games
  • The total has gone UNDER in 4 of NY Rangers’ last 5 games

Montreal Canadiens vs. Los Angeles Kings – Wednesday

The Montreal Canadiens are another team that is off to a surprisingly poor start to the season, picking up just 3 points in their first 5 games. It has been the offense that has been the issue for the Habs early on, as they have managed just 7 goals thus far. Things should definitely get better in Montreal, but it may not start happening just yet, with a west coast road swing on tap this week, which includes a trip to LA to face a Kings team currently sitting at the top of the Pacific Division.

The LA Kings are NHL Betting favorites against Montreal.

  • Canadiens are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games

  • The total has gone UNDER in 10 of Montreal’s last 15 games

Edmonton Oilers vs. Chicago Blackhawks – Thursday

The Edmonton Oilers were one of the biggest surprise teams of the season last year, and the feeling was that this young group of players would take another big step forward in 2017. While that still may happen, the early signs are that it may not be as straightforward as many people expected. The Oilers won their opening game of the year, but have gone on to lose the next 3, and now have a tough meeting against the red-hot Chicago Blackhawks on the road to look forward to.

Latest NHL Betting Trends

  • Oilers are 4-2 ATS in their last 6 games
  • Oilers are 2-6 SU in their last 8 games
  • Blackhawks are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games
  • Blackhawks are 4-13 SU in their last 17 games
  • The total has gone OVER in 4 of Chicago’s last 5 games

San Jose Sharks vs. New Jersey Devils – Friday

It’s a little too early in the season for fans to get carried away by a positive start, but try telling that to fans of the New Jersey Devils. They are the surprise leaders of the Metropolitan Division right now after picking up 8 points from their first 5 games. Perhaps the biggest surprise has been their ability to put the puck in the net, scoring 21 goals this season. Given that the Sharks have only managed 8 goals thus far, the Devils may not need to score a lot on Friday night. That said, San Jose is still a talented team that will break out of this early swoon.

Latest NHL Betting Trends

  • Devils are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games
  • Devils are 4-1 SU in their last 5 games
  • Sharks are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games
  • Sharks are 1-4 SU in their last 5 games
