Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final is in the books, and it was a great way to start this series. It was also a great start for those of you who played along with our picks for the opening game, as we nailed the SU and ATS picks, while falling short on the total score. The defending champion Pittsburgh Penguins looked as though they were going to cruise to victory in the opener, building up an early 3-0 lead. The Predators were able to chip away and get the game level, but Pittsburgh turned up the heat once more, eventually running out 5-3 winners, covering the spread in the process.

One game does not really shape how the entire series will go, but I get the feeling that these games are going to be a little more open than I initially thought. This is something I will be keeping in mind as I make my pick for Game 2, which is set to go in Pittsburgh on Wednesday night.

Stanley Cup Final Game 2 Straight Up Pick

The Pittsburgh Penguins are once again the favorites for Game 2, which isn’t really a surprise give how they have performed on home ice this season. Taking into account the regular season and playoffs, the Penguins are now 39-13 at home, which means they are winning 75% of their games in their own building. While the Predators have been able to get the job done away from home during the playoffs, most of their success has come in Game 1 of the series, where they have 3 wins out of 4, with the sole loss being in the final. You have to like the Penguins to take Game 2 as well.

It looked as though the Penguins were going to cover quite easily in the opening game, but they had to leave it late to get us the win. As I mentioned earlier, this series looks as though it might be quite open, which should translate to goals. The Penguins really need to play this style, especially since their defensive unit is banged up. Pittsburgh have all the offensive talent you could ever hope for, and they need to unleash the big guns to make up for their defensive frailties. I think they cover again in Game 2.

With the OVER in Game 1, the Pittsburgh Penguins now have an O/U record of 30-17-5 in their own building this season. I was concerned that they might have problems breaking down the Nashville defense in Game 1, but it did not play out that way at all. The Predators cannot really afford to sit back and be put in a position of playing from behind again, which suggests they will try to apply pressure to a banged-up Penguins D. I see more goals coming in Game 2, and I have the Penguins winning 4-2, which will take us OVER.
