PGA Tour 2021 US Open Betting Update: Day One Recap

PGA Tour 2021 US Open Betting Update: Day One Recap

The 121st playing of the U.S. Open teed off Thursday morning at the South Course at Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla, CA. This is the second time the USGA has brought the U.S. Open to Torrey, with its first stop in 2008.

The play was delayed for just over about ninety minutes due to a thick marine layer that reduced visibility, so players were late to get out to the course on time. A handful of players were unable to finish their first round and will attempt to wrap it up Friday morning. Let’s take a look at our latest US Open update so you can keep betting against their US Open odds.

Day One Rundown – Updated 2021 US Open Betting Analysis

Henley Leads Morning Wave

Three-time PGA winner Russell Henley posted the low score of the morning wave with a 4-under 67. Henley, whose best finish at a U.S. Open, was a T16 in 2010 as an amateur.

Henley had three birdies on the front and back, along with a bogey on each side of the card. The 32-year old hadn’t played Torrey Pines since shooting a 79 on the South Course at the Farmers Insurance Open in 2014.

Bogey Free Opener for Cabrera-Bello

Spanish golfer Rafa Cabrera-Bello was the only golfer in the morning wave to shoot a bogey-free round of golf on Thursday. The 37-year old birdied the second and eagled the 18th for a 3-under round.

Cabrera-Bello has never won on the PGA Tour but has three European Tour victories. This is Cabrera-Bello’s eighth U.S. Open, with his best finish coming last year with a T23 at Winged Foot.

Mickelson Struggles on Day One

The PGA Champion and oldest professional golfer to win a major struggled one day, posting a 4-over, 75. Mickelson collected just one birdie on the card and failed to take advantage of the three par-5s, playing them at one-over.

Mickelson, who lives in nearby San Diego, was one of the betting favorites to win the U.S. Open. A victory for Lefty would complete the career grand slam for the 50-year old Hall of Famer.

Koepka, Schauffele Impressive In Opening Round

Two-time U.S. Open champion Brooks Koepka opened with a 3-under on his first nine holes, getting to 4-under on the back before a pair of bogeys down the closing stretch put him a 2-under after 18. The U.S. Open isn’t won on Thursday, and Koepka put himself in a great position heading into round two.

Xander Schauffele is searching for his first major victory, and many looked at him as a likely candidate to win here this week. The 27-year old tallied four birdies over his first nine holes to jump out into red figures early.

DeChambeau Up and Down in Round One

Bryson DeChambeau, the defending U.S. Open champion, was part of the afternoon wave that could not complete the first round. The bomber got through a majority of the holes with an up and down performance that included three bogeys and two birdies on the front nine.

DeChambeau began his second nine with back-to-back bogeys on 11 and 12 to fall into a tie for 84th with six holes remaining in his first round.

Oosthuizen, Detry Go Low in First Nine

Louis Oosthuizen and Thomas Detry concluded their first nine holes of play with 3-under opening nines. Oosthuizen began his day on the back nine while Detry started on the front.

Both players were in their final nine of play at the time of writing this recap. Neither will likely finish their opening round on Thursday.
