There are really two kinds of PGA bettors: those who just bet on the big events like majors or the FedEx Cup playoffs and others who make multiple wagers every round every weekend.
There are appeals to both types of golf bettors; events like the Masters are special regardless but even that much more exciting with money on the line. Betting every week is where you can make the real money; finding that big underdog in a diluted field at an event like the John Deere Classic can have a 100/1 payout or higher.
Regardless of what type of bettor you are – or aim to be – it’s never too early to start looking forward to the next calendar year. Here are what look like some of the best PGA betting opportunities of 2023.
2023 PGA Calendar: Betting Opportunities
The Masters April 6th-9th
Scottie Scheffler had a nice start to the 2022 calendar year, winning the WM Phoenix Open and the Arnold Palmer Invitational. That run got him up to +1600 odds heading to Augusta – the fifth highest in the field – and he, of course, went on to edge out Rory McIlroy by three strokes.
With Tiger Woods fading into the sunset, Scheffler vs. McIlroy could be turning into the premier golf rivalry (this side of PGA vs. LIV). Scheffler cost McIlroy his first green jacket and the career grand slam, but the Northern Ireland native got revenge by passing Scheffler for the FedEx Cup Championship and the $18 million prize.
Scheffler vs. McIlroy will be a huge storyline at the 2023 Masters, but Jon Rahm (+1100) and Justin Thomas (+1100) are also at the top of the odds board. Cameron Smith (+1200) may also have a say in things representing the LIV, as he’s finished in the top three in two of his last three trips to Augusta.
- PGA Championship May 18th – 21st
- U.S. Open June 15th-18th
- The Open Championship July 20th-23rd
Of course, any major is going to draw a lot of interest, not just from betting but from the general public. This year the PGA is held at Oak Hill C.C. in Rochester, where Justin Thomas will try to defend his title, while the U.S. Open is on the opposite coast at the L.A. Country Club, with Matthew Fitzpatrick being the defending champion. The Open Championship is back at Royal Liverpool Golf Club for the first time since 2014.
Every Tournament, Every Week
Every tournament can have the excitement of a major when you have betting action for the weekend. Take the aforementioned John Deere Classic this season, it was a name-out-of-a-hat field, and J.T. Poston got the win at +4000.
Poston’s payout was nothing compared to the next weekend at the Barbasol Championship, where Trey Mullinax picked up the win and cashed at whopping +15000 odds.
Going in tournaments like the JDC or the Barbasol may not seem on paper like they’d have a ton of excitement, but when you’ve got a Poston or a Mullinax ticket, and they’re making the turn on the back nine on Sunday with the lead the heart starts beating more intensely every swing of the club – and there’s no better feeling.
Let’s get that calendar turned over already; we’ve got a lot of golf betting to do in 2023.
I have read enough, I need to place my bet now. What to do?
