Brazil

If you had to choose just one team to watch for the rest of your life, a lot of people would probably opt for Brazil. This is a nation with unparalleled success in the World Cup, but with that comes unparalleled pressure. If Brazil does not win it all, their performance will be considered a total failure. That’s a lot to live up to, and things are likely to be even more intense this time around after Brazil lost 7-1 to Germany in the semi-final in 2014 on home soil. Neymar will be the man carrying the hopes of a nation on his shoulders, but he is also surrounded by a stunning wealth of talent. Look for Brazil to hit the ground running as they look to get off to a fast start.

Costa Rica

Los Ticos made it to the quarter-finals in their last World Cup appearance, and if they are to do the same again, they are going to need to rely heavily on what is a very solid defensive unit. Costa Rica has one of the best goalkeepers in the world in Keylor Navas, and he does an exceptional job of managing the defense in front of him. This is a team with some talent in other areas of the field, but they are not necessarily known as a strong attacking team. They do have a pair of talented strikers, but both are coming off injuries that could lead to a little rust.

Serbia

While the Serbians topped their qualifying group to get to Russia, it should be noted that they were in a group that was not exactly stacked with the top teams in Europe. That said, this is a group that has the potential to control games if their midfield can play at it’s best. Serbia has a midfield trio, which includes Nemanja Matic of Manchester United, that can hang with the very best. The question here is whether they can turn their dominance in the middle of the park to clear-cut goals scoring opportunities. They are probably going to need a lot of those to get out of this group.

Switzerland

The Swiss took a circuitous route to Russia, needing to beat out Northern Ireland 1-0 on aggregate in a playoff. They did have the best record of all the second place finishers in European qualifying, though, so they are by no means awful. The problem that Switzerland faces heading into this tournament is figuring out where the goals are going to come from. Xherdan Shaqiri is more of a playmaker than goal scorer, but it is he who the Swiss will likely be leaning on heavily in Russia.
