Among favored USA, France, Germany, and England, which squad has the best chance of winning the Women’s World Cup?

The United States is a favorite for a reason. They’re the defending champions. However, the USA lost in the quarterfinals at the 2016 Olympics. That was the first time the United States’ women’s soccer squad has lost in a major tournament short of a semifinal berth. The failure at the 2016 Olympics could linger here, making the U.S. a prime favorite to go against.

Germany has a great player in Alexandra Popp. She has 45 goals in 95 matches. She’ll put the ball into the back of the net for the Germans during the World Cup. Germany also has a favorable draw as they mustn’t face USA or France until the finals.

Like Germany, England should reach the semifinals. They have everything it takes to win the World Cup. Also like Germany, though, the English should run into the team that offers the most value to win the World Cup among the favorites, France.

France must face the United States before the finals. The French might be the deepest team in this World Cup. Not only that, but they have homefield advantage throughout. It’s now or never for France to end the United States’ reign. At decent +350 odds, France deserves the most attention.

Which teams from +1400 to +6600 odds can lift the Cup?

There is a massive gap in quality between the first four favorites and the rest of the World Cup field. However, Spain has a quickly improving women’s soccer program. The Spanish went 8-0-0 in UEFA Qualifying, beating Austria, Finland, Serbia, and Israel.

Spain has built it’s squad on the defensive side. In those 8 qualifying matches, the Spanish yielded only 2 goals. La Roja’s defense is as stingy as it gets in this World Cup. The knock comes on offense where Spain relies too heavily on Jennifer Hermoso.

Hermoso scored 16 of Spain’s 25 goals during qualifying. If Hermoso can get some help on the offensive end, Spain could be tough to beat.

Is their major underdog that has any shot of winning the 2019 Women’s World Cup?

Not really. But if soccer handicappers really want to back a major dog, they could do worse than to put money behind Scotland. The Scottish boast one of the world’s best midfielders in Kim Little. She should lead Scotland through to the elimination round.

From there, Scotland must pick it up to have any shot. At the odds, though, the Scottish might be worth a look.
