ATP: 250: Open Sud de France – Montpellier

The ATP Tour has three stops set for this week, with tournaments in France, Argentina, and the United States. The events in Montpellier, France, Dallas, and Texas, are hard-court, indoor tournaments while the event in Cordoba, Argentina, will be played on clay. None of the events include the world’s top-ranked players, such as Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, Rafael Nadal, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alexander Zverev, and Casper Ruud are either injured or taking time off before the ATP 500 events and Masters events start later this month.

Most of the European-based players are headed for the Open Sud de France in Montpellier, an ATP 250 event. A long-standing event on the tour that dates back decades, the Open Sud de France moved from Lyon to Montpellier, in Southern France, in 2010.

MyBookie has ATP odds on all the tennis action for the week, so let’s take a look at Monday’s action in France.

ATP 250 Betting Prediction for Open Sud de France

When: February 6 to 12, 2023
Where: Montpellier, France

Surface: Hard (Indoor)
Prize Money: €562,815

Holger Rune the Top Seed

Ranked ninth in the world, Denmark’s Holger Rune is the top seed at Montpellier. The 19-year-old is 3-2 so far this season, and he lost a 5-set match in the fourth round of the Australian Open to No. 5 seed Andrey Rublev. Rune won three titles last year, including the Stockholm Open and the Paris Masters on indoor hard courts.

The top four seeds in the 28-player draw have a first-round bye. Rune, No. 2 Jannik Sinner, No. 3 Borna Coric, and No. 4 Roberto Bautista Agut will all start on Tuesday, while the rest of the field plays on Monday at Montpellier Arena.

Defending Champ With a Tough Draw

Alexander Bublik is Montpellier’s defending champion, and he’s seeded No. 6 this week. However, he’s not the favorite in his first-round match on Monday. Bublik is +118 as he faces Gregoire Barrere, who is -156, to win the opening match.

Bublik is ranked 36 in the world, but he is 0-4 so far in 2023. Barrere is ranked 76th and is 1-2 so far this season. Neither player has shown a lot on the court yet in 2023, and they have split two head-to-head matches, with Bublik winning at Rotterdam in 2020 and Barrere taking a 4-set win at Wimbledon in 2019.

Last year Bublik knocked off Bautista Agut, Filip Krajinovic, and Zverev to win the title from the same No. 6 seed position for his only career title. Bublik played in Chile for his native Kazakhstan over the weekend in Davis Cup, losing both singles matches. Traveling halfway across the world to face Barrere is a tough task, but he has the talent to pull off the win as a plus money line underdog.

Ruusuvuori Looks to Build off Davis Cup Success

Emil Ruusuvuori is seeded No. 7 at Montpellier but is also an underdog for his first-round matchup against Mikael Ymer. Ruusuvuori is listed at +102, while Ymer is -133 to move on to the second round. In ATP action, Ruusuvuori is 1-3 this season, while Ymer is 2-3, including a head-to-head 3-set win in Adelaide last month.

These two have met four times in their history, with Ruusuvuori winning in Sweden and Miami in 2021, and Ymer also won in Washington last summer. All four of those matches went three sets, so this one should also be a great match.

Ruusuvuori was a force for Finland last week at home in the Davis Cup upset of Argentina. He won both of his singles matches, including the clincher, and also teamed up with Harri Heliovaara to win the doubles point. That weekend success should give him the confidence to knock off Ymer in France and move on to the second round.

Gasquet an Unseeded Favorite

No one has had as much success at the Open Sud de France over the years as veteran Richard Gasquet. A four-time winner at the event and a six-time finalist, Gasquet is -188 in the opening match against teenager Arthur Fils who is +150.

This matchup of Frenchmen is a contrast of experience. Gasquet has 592 wins on the ATP Tour, and he won his 16th career title earlier this season in Auckland to regain his status as the top-ranked French player (#46). Fils is ranked 164th and is still looking for his first official ATP match victory.

Gasquet is 4-2 on the season, and the title in Auckland was his first since 2018. This could be his final appearance at Montpellier, so look for him to make a run at yet another final.
