Federico Delbonis of Argentina will lock horns with Greece’s Michail Pervolarakis in Group D at the 2022 ATP Cup on Monday, 3.

Delbonis, ranked no.44 in the world, kicked off his ATP Cup 2022 campaign with a crucial win over Aleksandre Metreveli (6-1, 6-2). He won 86% of his first serves and managed to convert six of nine break points to claim the top spot in Group D.

This is in complete contrast to Argentinian’s performance in 2021 when he wasn’t able to achieve much. But the 31-year-old seems determined to turn things around in 2022.

Looking back, Delbonis ended 2021 with a 23-24 record and no titles. Interestingly, nine of 24 losses came at the end of the season.

That isn’t that surprising knowing that Delbonis does better on clay – he reached SF in Santiago, Belgrade, and Hamburg. Adding to that, the Argentine made it to the QF in the Rome Masters.

Pervolarakis had kicked off his ATP Cup 2022 campaign with a defeat against Kamil Majchrzak, who pushed the Greek to the third spot in Group D. This effectively puts Pervolarakis in a do-or-die situation since he can’t afford another defeat.

But that might be a bit too much to ask from world no.399.

The 25-year-old has spent most of 2021 competing in ITF Challenger, and while he has made a few finals, Pervolarakis ended the season with no titles.

This is Pervolarakis’s third appearance at the ATP Cup, and he has yet to win a single match. And given his form and lack of experience, that’s highly unlikely going to change on Monday.

Stefanos Tsitsipas v Diego Schwartzman

World no.4, Stefanos Tsitsipas will clash with world no.13 Diego Schwartzman on Monday, in what promises to be an exciting bout.

Tsitsipas enters this match after he had to pull out from his opener against Hubert Hurkacz with an elbow injury. The same injury saw him step out of the ATP Finals in November, where he has played only one game.

While that could make you question Tsitsipas’ ability to win on Monday, the Greek has noted that he is recovering from an injury well and that his Saturday’s withdrawal was just a precautionary measure.

At the ATP Cup, Tsitsipas is 3-2 with one win and two defeats in 2020, and two wins in 2021. Beyond that, he had a very solid season in 2021, finishing it with a 55-19 record and two titles – including Monte Carlo (Masters 1000) and Lyon.

And adding to his impressive list of achievements in 2021, Tsitsipas also secured his career-best Grand Slam placement when he made the finals at Roland Garros before he had to admit defeat to Novak Djokovic in five sets.

Schwartzman enjoyed a solid start to the year with a dominant showing against Nikoloz Basilashvili. Schwartzman won 80% of his serves and converted five of nine break points to secure a 6-1, 6-2 victory in under an hour.

The 29-year-old ended the 2021 season with a 39-23 record and a title from Buenos Aires in March. Adding to that, he also made it to the finals in Antwerp, so it’s fair to say that he had shown a lot. But we doubt Schwartzman can outperform Tsitsipas on Monday.

Schwartzman is a solid player, and he will surely test the Greek, but ultimately, we expect the world no.4 to come out ahead. A 2-1 victory for Tsitsipas seems like a likely outcome.
