Swiatek Marches On

The current world no.1, Iga Swiatek, has made it to the quarter-finals on Monday by beating China’s Qinwen Zheng by 6-7, 6-0, 6-2. It was not the cleanest of performances from the tournament favorite, but perhaps it’s fairer to say that Zheng put up a very impressive fight.

Zheng actually took the series lead with 7-6 before Swiatek found her stride and completed a phenomenal comeback, winning the final two sets with 6-0 and 6-2, to not only book her spot in the QF of the 2022 French Open but also to prove why she is the current no.1 in the women’s tennis.

By securing her spot in the next stage, Swiatek has now kept her streak alive and locked in her career fourth French Open QFs, having reached this stage of the tournament in all of her last four visits. That stretch included a title from 2020 and a QF-finish in 2021.

Zheng Qinwen, on the other side, can be happy with her performances in France, where she has locked in her career-best Grand Slam placement in her debut appearance at Roland Garros.

Rublev Reaches Final Eight

Andrey Rublev continued his streak of strong showings on Monday when he eliminated Jannik Sinner from the tournament to reach his career second QF in France.

Unfortunately, for the tennis fans, Rublev and Sinner failed to produce a game worthy of a fourth-round, as Sinner was forced to retire while the game was tied at 1-1.

The unfortunate circumstance sees Sinner fail to reach R4 at French Open for the first time in his career. Having made QFs in his debut in 2020 and R4 in 2021. 

Rublev, on the other side, has now reached the furthest at a Grand Slam since the 2021 Australian Open (GFs), having since crashed out of the 2021 French Open in R1, the Wimbledon ion R4, U.S. Open in R3, and the 2022 Australian Open in R3.

Pegula Survives

Jessica Pegula has edged her way into the French Open Qfs with a narrow yet well-deserved victory against Irina Begu, who Pegula defeated with 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. The 11th seed has now become the 3rd American since Gauff and Stephens reached the quarter-finals of the French Open.

Interestingly, by reaching the QFs, Pegula now has two back-to-back quarter-finals appearances at majors, as she already made QF in Australia. The three also remain Pegula’s only major top-8 placements of her career.

For Irina Begu, her R4 exit from the French Open marks the 11th time she did not make it past the fourth round in France or in any of the remaining three Grand Slam tournaments.

Pegula will now face off against the current world no.1m Swiatek. The two tennis players will meet on Wednesday, June 1, for the first time since Miami Open, when Swiatek won 2-0.
