WTA French Open Top Odds Picks for the Women’s Round

Second-round play on the women’s side continues on the red clay of Roland Garros in Paris for the 2016 French Open on Wednesday, highlighted by matches involving No. 6 Simona Halep, a legitimate contender here, and No. 2 Agnieszka Radwanska. Both are favored in the online betting odds to advance.

Simona Halep vs Zarina Diyas

Halep, who opened this tournament as the third betting favorite, moved on with an easy 6-2, 6-0 victory against Nao Hibino. Three of Halep’s last four Grand Slam appearances have ended with defeat to players ranked outside the Top 50, but there was never any danger of world No. 70 Hibino extending this sequence. Two years ago, on the back of a terrific clay court season Halep made it all the way to the final at Roland Garros. Despite a recent triumph in Madrid, this time around she arrived in the French capital with less fanfare, yet a favorable draw has opened up the possibility of another deep run. Halep, 25, is aiming to go one step further this year in Paris after being runner-up in 2014. She seems to have found her form since winning the Madrid Masters and is probably the biggest threat to Serena Williams in her current state. Halep is a -1400 favorite on betting odds against Zarina Diyas, who is ranked No. 90 in the world. She beat Carina Witthoeft in three sets in Round 1. Diyas won 61 percent of her first serve points and 30 percent of her second serve points. She has two career wins over Top-10 players. Diyas has won five singles titles on the ITF tour. In January 2015, she reached her best singles ranking of world No. 31. Diyas is primarily an aggressive baseliner whose game is centered around powerful and accurate groundstrokes. Her forehand, which generates a considerable amount of pace, is often used to move her opponents around the court and out of position, which therefore allows her to dominate and win points from or around the back of the court. These two have faced twice in the past, and Help won both in straight sets. The two matches took place in the 2014 Wimbledon and 2014 Australian Open. Diyas has won just eight games against Halep in both matches.

Agnieszka Radwanska vs Carolina Garcia

Meanwhile, No. 2 Radwanska advanced with a 6-0, 6-2 rout of Bojana Jovanovski. Radwanska hadn’t played a match since losing in the first round of the Madrid Open to Dominika Cibulkova, but it was an even longer lay-off for Jovanovski, who had been off the tour since St. Petersburg in February. As the Serb struggled to find her range, Radwanska soared, hitting 22 winners to just nine unforced errors, breaking serve five times and saving all three break points. Radwanska, from Poland, won the WTA Tour finals last year and reached the Australian Open semifinals this season but has had mixed clay-court results in 2016 and her best result in Paris to date was reaching the quarterfinals in 2013. She will face Carolina Garcia. She advanced with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Lesia Tsurenko. With the crowd behind the young Frenchwoman, Garcia swept the final five games to win her fifth match in a row following her title run at the Internationaux de Strasbourg last week. Radwanska is a -185 favorite. My Expert Predictions Take both favorites in online betting, although I do give Garcia a legitimate shot at the upset and do expect that to go three sets.
