ATP 2022 Moselle Open Analysis, Betting Favorites, and Predictions

The Moselle Open in Metz, France, begins on September 19 and runs until the 25th. Metz, also known as the “Green City,” is a beautiful destination regarded for its outdoor scenery and yellow limestone architecture, but the action will be indoors as the indoor hard court season gets underway following the fourth Grand Slam of the year: the US Open.

US Open winner Carlos Alcaraz isn’t expected to participate in the ATP 250 event, and nor should he. The 19-year-old Spaniard spent a record amount of time on the court at the US Open, including three consecutive five-set matches before meeting Casper Ruud in the finals. However, the draw is expected to be very good for an ATP 250 event.

Former world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev headlines the field. The Russian lost to Nick Kyrgios in the Round of 16 at the US Open, allowing Alcaraz to take over the top spot in the world. Other notable players expected to play include; Dominic Thiem, Hubert Hurkacz, Karen Khachanov, Lorenzo Musetti, and Holger Rune.

Because the field isn’t entirely determined, there are no outright ATP Betting Odds set as of yet, nor are there any scheduled matches. Here’s an idea of what to expect, however.

Tennis Betting Preview for the ATP 250: 2022 Moselle Open Tournament

Hurkacz Defending His Title

A five-time winner on the ATP Tour, Hurkacz won his fourth title last season at the Moselle Open. In fact, he won both the singles and doubles tournaments.

The 25-year-old Polish player, currently ranked No. 10 in the world, received a bye into the Round of 16 and defeated Lucas Pouille, Andy Murray, Peter Gojowczyk, and Pablo Carreno Busta en route to winning the singles title. He didn’t drop a single set in those four matches.

Hurkacz is a strong bet to repeat as champion, although nobody has defended their title in Metz since Jo-Wilfred Tsonga in 2012. Hurkacz is 33-16 this season but was upset in the Round of 64 at the US Open by Ilya Ivashka. He reached the finals of the Canadian Open and won the ATP Halle event in an impressive fashion, defeating Felix Auger-Aliassime, Kyrgios, and Medvedev.

Bet on the French Players

If you’re not that confident in Hurkacz chances to win the Moselle Open, the next best bet is on a Frenchman. Since the tournament launched in 2003, French players have won in Metz 11 times. Arnaud Clement won the inaugural tournament.

Tsonga won the Moselle Open in 2011, 2012, 2015, and 2019. Gilles Simon, meanwhile, won in 2010, 2013, and 2018. Pouille, Gael Monfils, and Jerome Haehnel also won the event. Hurkacz was only the third non-French player to win since 2008.

Monfils, the champion in 2009, is the top-ranked French player at this year’s event. Monfils is ranked No. 32 in the world. The 36-year-old has played sparingly this season. He’s 14-7 and won the ATP event in Adelaide, Australia, earlier this season.

Benjamin Bonzi, ranked No. 53, is also participating in the tournament. He’s 20-19 this season and is coming off of a decent showing against Kyrgios in the US Open, losing in a tight, four-set match.
