All the teams near the top of the AFL standings took care of their business last week, so a log jam still remains. Melbourne (12-3) still holds a one-game lead at the top of the board, but Geelong (11-4), Brisbane (11-4), Fremantle (11-4), Carlton (10-5), and Collingwood (10-5) are all in hot pursuit.
We should be in for another exciting week! Let’s see if any clarity starts to develop as we take a look at the top games for week 17 so you can place your bets against their AFL Odds.
Top AFL Round 17 Betting Games for the Week
Melbourne Demons (-1.5) vs Geelong Cats, Thursday 5:20 AM ET
Easily the premier game of the weekend is the #1 Demons against the second-place Cats. Geelong is a slight home underdog despite being on a six-game win streak, giving them some obvious value in this matchup.
Melbourne has bounced back from their devastating three-match losing streak to post back-to-back wins on the board, including a 117-53 victory over second-seeded Brisbane in round 15.
That being said, Geelong has won their last seven home games against teams that had won the premiership the season prior, and they have some nice momentum going right now.
Western Bulldogs vs Sydney Swans (-8.5), Friday 5:50 AM ET
Western and Sydney are both part of the jam-packed middle of the AFL ladder, with just two games separating the 7th and 12th seeds. Sydney has won three straight at home, which is a major reason why they are such significant favorites even though just one game separates the two teams in the ladder.
Ultimately this seems like too many points to be giving a Bulldogs team that is coming off a loss but to 11-4 Brisbane. Sydney lost to lowly Essendon last weekend and simply cannot be trusted even at home.
Richmond Tigers vs Gold Coast Suns (-1.5), Saturday 2:35 AM ET
The Tigers’ 9-6 record is a bit deceiving since it was built largely off of a 2-4 start to the season. Since then, Richmond has won seven of their last nine games as they are one of the under-the-radar hottest teams in the AFL.
Oddsmakers still have Gold Coast as slight favorites on Saturday, interesting as the Suns come into this contest on the heels of a two-game losing streak. This could be a trap line, but it’s hard not to like Richmond in this match.
Fremantle Dockers vs St. Kilda Saints (-1.5), Saturday 5:25 AM ET
The Dockers continue to keep pace in the ladder, just a game back from Melbourne at 11-4. With the Demons and Geelong (the top two teams in the AFL) squaring off this week, it presents a great opportunity for Fremantle to keep pace if they can get a win over the Saints.
The Dockers are underdogs in this one despite winning 10 of their last 13 games. St. Kilda is just 1-3 in their last four games and really don’t warrant being favored against a legitimate flag contender in Fremantle.
