The University of Washington is having its best football season in years with the Huskies up to No. 5 in the AP Top 25, favored to win the Pac-12 title in its final season in the conference, and QB Michael Penix Jr. as the Heisman Trophy favorite.

Last Season

In 2022, ASU hosted No. 21 Washington and pulled off a 45-38 upset. Called into action after starting QB Emory Jones was injured, Trenton Bourguet threw for three touchdowns for the Sun Devils. He hit Elijhah Badger for two touchdowns, including a 2-yarder in the fourth quarter to put the Sun Devils up 45-38. Arizona State stopped the Huskies on fourth-and-9 near midfield and a botched snap all but ended Washington’s final drive. UW star QB Michael Penix Jr. threw for 311 yards on 33-of-53 passing, but no touchdowns.

Arizona State leads the all-time series against the Huskies, 21-17. At one point, UW led 15-8, but ASU has won 13 of the past 15.

Why Bet on Arizona State?

Arizona State (1-5) is in a bit of a rebuild of the entire program under first-year coach Kenny Dillingham, the former Oregon offensive coordinator. Injuries have destroyed the quarterback position this year. Touted freshman Jaden Rashida opened the season as the starter but was hurt in the second game. He had 403 passing yards (34-of-60), three touchdowns and one interception across those two appearances. Rashada’s leg is better, though, and he is expected to see increased involvement in weekly gameplans moving forward.

Fellow QB Drew Pyne is week-to-week due to an undisclosed injury. The redshirt sophomore quarterback has appeared in just two games this season, totaling 273 passing yards (26-of-49), two touchdowns and three interceptions. If Pyne is ultimately unable to suit up against Washington, Trenton Bourguet is likely to get the start under center again.

The Sun Devils are off their needed bye week on a five-game skid. ASU played pretty well on Oct. 7 in losing 27-24 to Colorado. Bourguet operated a 13-play, 96-yard drive taking only 2:38 seconds to tie the game at 24 with 50 seconds left, but the Buffs won on a field goal. It is the first time ASU has had a 90+ yard under 3 minutes since a :50 drive against Arizona on Dec. 11, 2020.

Bourguet finished with 335 yards and a touchdown on 32-of-49 passing, his fifth 300-yard game. He is now tied for eighth in program history with five 300+ yard games through the air. He added his first career rushing touchdown on a two-yard sneak in the first quarter.

Elijhah Badger led with 124 receiving yards and hauled in 12 receptions. It sets a new career high in receptions for the junior that was set a few weeks earlier with nine receptions against USC. Badger’s performance was his third career game with 100+ receiving yards, last occurring against the Buffaloes on Oct. 29, 2022. He also surpassed 100 career receptions.

ASU held the Buffaloes to only 295 total yards. Other than the season opener, ASU had held every opponent under what their season scoring average was coming into the game. Colorado came into the game averaging 34.2 points per game.

The bye came at a great time as a total of 20 players have missed a combined 59 games. Eight players have missed four or more contests, seven of those on the offensive side of the ball. Six different offensive linemen have missed action this season. Isaia Glass, who has missed five games overall, and Cade Briggs, who has missed two games overall, could potentially help that situation. Dillingham said during Monday’s news conference that he’s hopeful both will return this week.

Why Bet on Washington?

Washington became the Pac-12 favorite with a thrilling 36-33 win over fellow unbeaten Oregon last Saturday. Huskies star QB and Heisman favorite Michael Penix Jr. threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Rome Odunze with 1:38 remaining and Camden Lewis missed a 43-yard field goal attempt for the Ducks. The 115th matchup between the rivals was the first that featured both teams ranked in the Top 10.

Penix Jr. has now thrown multiple touchdowns in 15 of 19 games as a Husky. He has 2,301 passing yards through six games this year, ahead of pace to break his own school record of 4,641 yards (over 13 games). His average of 383.5 yards per game would give him 4,986 yards over a 13-game 2023 season (UW is bowl eligible).

Washington has notched 47 scrimmage plays of 20 or more yards over its first six games, the second-highest per-game average in the nation. UW also leads the nation (on per-game average) with 26 plays of 30 yards or more. Those totals include 39 passes of 20 or more yards, and 21 of 30 or more from Penix Jr. Both of those averages are also tops in the nation.

Rome Odunze finished with 100-plus receiving yards (128) for the fifth time in six games this season. Fellow wideout Ja’Lynn Polk had 118 yards. Prior to the start of this season, Washington had had just eight games in its history with two players finishing with 100 or more receiving yards. So far this season, Washington has had two players with 100 receiving yards in five of six games. Odunze is tied for second in the nation with 32 receptions of 10-plus and 14 of 20-plus yards, while has 11 20-plus yard receptions. UW leads the nation in passing offense, and is No. 3 total offense and No. 5 in scoring offense.

Meanwhile, UW’s defense has allowed just 21 plays of 20 or more yards this season, 26 fewer than the Husky offense has had. UW’s defense has 8 interceptions, surpassing 2022’s season total (7).

Washington is 17-2 overall, and 11-0 at home under head coach Kalen DeBoer. UW is 6-0 for the first time since 2017.
