The Buffs try for the season sweep as they trounced visiting Oregon 86-70 on Jan. 18. Buffs freshman Cody Williams scored 23 points on 10-of-13 shooting, while KJ Simpson added 22 points. Williams — Colorado’s first 5-star recruit since David Harrison in 2001 — hit three 3-pointers, one from NBA range, and consistently scored at the rim, including a two-hand dunk and layup through heavy contact. Tristan da Silva had 13 points and eight rebounds for Colorado. Da Silva hit a 3-pointer to give Colorado the lead for good with 10:26 to play and spark a 17-2 run, capped by a Williams 3, that made it 73-61 about five minutes later. Jadrian Tracey led Oregon with 14 points off the bench. The Ducks are 10-14 against Colorado under Coach Dana Altman. He has a winning record against every Pac-12 opponent outside of Colorado.

Why Bet on Colorado?

Colorado (20-9, 11-7 Pac-12) won its fourth straight game Sunday in its home finale, 81-71 over Stanford. The first half saw seven lead changes, with the Cardinal leading by as many as five points. After a back-and-forth start, Maxime Raynaud, Brandon Angel and Michael Jones led a 12-3 run to give Stanford a 24-19 advantage, but the Buffaloes responded with a 17-3 run of their own. The Cardinal scored seven of the final nine points in the period and trailed at the break, 44-37.

Raynaud scored 13 points in the second half, including back-to-back field goals to open the period and cut the deficit to one possession. The Cardinal closed the game on a 13-3 run, but Colorado held on to secure the win. The Buffaloes shot 53% (33 of 62) from the field and made 11 of 25 from 3-point range. Colorado outrebounded the Cardinal 38-27 and used a 10-6 advantage on the offensive glass to outscore Stanford 13-4 in second-chance points.

Colorado’s Tristan da Silva celebrated Senior Night with a 27-point, 11-rebound double-double. Da Silva’s points and rebounds were both season highs. KJ Simpson added 22 points and seven assists for the Buffs, J’Vonne Hadley scored 15 and Eddie Lampkin Jr. chipped in 11. Colorado also improved to 16-1 at home this season as the Buffs cliched their 10th 20-win season in Tad Boyle’s 14 years in Boulder.

“We just wanted to come out and play for the seniors,” Simpson said. “We knew they were a good offensive team but in the second half we wanted to take away their threes and we did that.”

Cody Williams (ankle) missed his second consecutive game for Colorado. The 6-foot-8 freshman, a potential No. 1 pick in the 2024 NBA draft, has missed 11 games this season due to multiple injuries. CU has scored at least 80 points in each of their last four games — and perhaps most importantly, has averaged less than nine turnovers per game over the last three contests.

Simpson has averaged more than 26 points and nearly six assists per game in the stretch. For the year, Simpson is averaging 19.9 points per game (second in the Pac-12) and 4.79 assists (second) while shooting nearly 50 percent from the floor, including .462 from 3-point range (tops in the Pac-12).

The victory moved the Buffs into a tie for third with Oregon in the Pac-12 standings, with the top four in the league earning a first-round bye in next week’s conference tournament. The win also guaranteed the Buffs a winning conference record, Boyle’s ninth winning conference mark in 13 Pac-12 seasons.

Colorado’s overall NET ranking — a critical evaluation metric for the NCAA Selection Committee — currently sits at 31, a solid number. But the Buffs are just 2-7 in true road games this season.

“I just want to go out and play as well as we can,” Boyle said. “We know that Oregon’s a good team. They’re a talented team that can really get out in transition and put points up. The best way to guard them is to not let them get out in transition. Get set and lock in. If we do that, we’ll have a chance. … We have to take care of the ball, not let them turn us over and get out in transition. When they get out in transition at home they get the crowd into it, start making threes and get dunks.”

Why Bet on Oregon?

Oregon (19-10, 11-7 Pac-12) is coming off a 103-83 loss at No. 6 Arizona. Dana Altman’s squad has experienced an injury-plagued, up-and-down season, but they are particularly dangerous on their home floor with a 12-2 record in Eugene.

However, Oregon was no match for Arizona, which had a 17-point lead midway through the first half Saturday and never looked back. The Wildcats shot 61% overall, went 14 for 25 from 3 and had 27 assists on 39 made field goals to finish the season 15-1 at home. Oregon was much better offensively to start the second half, hitting nine of 10 shots at one point. The Ducks shot 22 of 33 in the second half, yet couldn’t get the lead under 15.

“We got kicked. We didn’t guard. A lot of mistakes — a lot of mistakes,” Altman said. “Really disappointed. We didn’t compete like I wanted us to. … If somebody told me before the game that you’re going to shoot 52% from the field and 30% from 3, score 83 points, I would have felt pretty good. But they beat us in every facet.”

Ducks guard Jermaine Couisnard scored a career-high 39 points, 33 in the second half. Couisnard finished the game shooting 14-for-24 (58.3-percent) from the floor with four triples. He became the first Duck to score 39-or-more points in nearly two decades, last achieved by Luke Jackson who scored 40 against Colorado on March 17, 2004. Jackson Shelstad and N’Faly Dante each finished the game with 16 points, combining with Couisnard to score 86-percent of the Ducks’ total. Dante finished the game with a double-double, his fifth of the season.

The Ducks have secured a winning record in Pac-12 play for the 13th consecutive season, longest streak in the conference. This is their last year in the Pac-12 as they head to the Big Ten. UO is 7-1 this season when hitting at least 50% of its shots and 11-1 when holding opponents to 70 or fewer points.

Couisnard has been dealing with an illness this week that has cost him some practice time but is expected to play. He leads the team in scoring at 15.5 ppg while adding 4.5 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game.

There has been some talk that Altman, in his 14th season at Oregon, might consider retirement but he shot that down this week. Altman is the all-time winningest coach at Oregon, with 340 career wins. He holds a 166-90 record in league play. That number ranks 10th all-time in Pac-12 history.

Series History

Oregon is 10-13 against Colorado under Coach Dana Altman. The teams split the series last season with each team winning at home. The game in Boulder was a 68-41 blowout for the Buffs behind 30 points from Tristan da Silva and remains a key player this season for CU. Quincy Guerrier scored 10 points for Oregon, which missed its first 13 3-pointers before making one with 3:29 left. They shot just 26.9% from the field overall with a scant three assists. Oregon was also 12 of 21 from the free-throw line.

Why Bet on Oregon Ducks?

The Ducks (13-3) is close to being ranked after winning their sixth game in a row Saturday, 80-73 over Cal. Trailing by 18 late in the first half, Oregon stormed all the way back to remain perfect at home. Oregon had been 0-3 when trailing by double digits this season with its biggest comeback having overcome an eight-point deficit to beat UTEP on Dec. 9.

Jermaine Couisnard had 18 points to lead the Ducks (5-0 Pac-12), including a three-pointer just before halftime to cap a 16-2 run that cut Oregon’s deficit to 43-39 at the break. It was his fourth straight game scoring at least 15 points. The Ducks took the lead for good on a Kario Oquendo three-pointer at the 11:34 mark of the second half.

Jadrian Tracey added 14 points for the Ducks, and led all players with a plus-21 margin when he was on the court Saturday. Keeshawn Barthelemy and Jackson Shelstad each added 12 points, while starting big man Mahamadou Diawara was plus-20 in his 19 minutes of action. Shelstad has scored 10+ points in 11 consecutive games. That’s the longest streak by a UO freshman since Tyler Dorsey (11) in 2015-16.

Saturday’s game also featured the return of UO star center N’Faly Dante, who hadn’t played since the season opener due to injury. He had eight points and two rebounds in his return for the Ducks, who remain the only unbeaten Pac-12 team in conference play.

“We gotta get used to playing with him, getting more movement when we throw the ball to him so they can’t double him as easy,” Coach Dana Altman said. “But defensively there late, he really did a good job.”

Oregon had four turnovers vs. Cal and had just two earlier this season against Montana, marking the first time since at least 1996-97 the school has had 2 games with 4 or fewer in a season. With Altman at the helm, the Ducks are now 194-19 when recording fewer turnovers than the opponent.

The Ducks have found success on the road and rank second with 64 Pac-12 road wins under Altman. He has a winning record against every Pac-12 opponent outside of Colorado.

Why Bet on Colorado Buffaloes?

Colorado (12-5) snapped a three-game skid Saturday with a 68-58 win over USC. The Trojans missed three starters in leading scorer Boogie Ellis (hamstring), assists leader Isaiah Collier (hand) and top shot blocker Joshua Morgan (illness) and were forced to go deep in their rotation. Despite that, USC led for 26 of the game’s 40 minutes and led by 16 points with 8:42 remaining in the first half. Cody Williams made a buzzer-beating layup for Colorado, but the Trojans still had a 10-point lead at halftime.

But the Buffs kicked in their defense in the second half and the offense prospered as a result. CU held the Trojans to just 24 percent shooting in the second period (7-for-29) while forcing 10 turnovers and the Buffs converted those miscues into 12 points. Colorado also shot 56 percent after the break (18-for-32).

CU did lose the rebound battle, 40-36, but the big difference came in the transition game. Colorado outscored USC 21-3 in fast break points, with the Buffs tallying 17 of those in the second half. J’Vonne Hadley led the Buffs with 15 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Cody Williams scored 13 and Tristan da Silva and Eddie Lampkin Jr. each scored 12, with Lampkin adding seven rebounds as Colorado improved to 10-0 at home this year.

“The credit goes to our kids,” Coach Tad Boyle said. “They were frustrated, down at halftime. We weren’t ourselves offensively or defensively. But they dug in in the second half. We really guarded them. They played with grit and toughness and we got the win.”

The win marked Colorado’s 500th all-time at the CU Events Center, which opened for the 1979-80 season (500-190). The Buffs have an 11-1 all-time advantage over Oregon in games played in Boulder.

Colorado is one of the top all-around shooting teams in the country, ranking in the top 21 nationally in all three percentage categories: overall field goal, 3-point and free throws. The Buffaloes are 10th in the nation in 3-point shooting (.396), 11th in overall field goal percentage (.505) and 21st from the line (.769). Along with leading the Pac-12 in 3-point and free throw percentage, the Buffaloes are second in overall shooting and rebound margin. They have outrebounded teams in 15 of 17 games.

With the top seven players in CU’s rotation set to take the floor in consecutive games Thursday for the first time since early December, there remains enough time to fix the team’s half-to-half rollercoaster that has marked the entire season — it tends to play great one half and terrible in the other as it did vs. USC. That half-to-half disparity has been particularly frustrating for Boyle, given his team’s experience.

“I think our players, they don’t understand how hard they have to play. I just don’t think they do,” Boyle said. “You have to play hard. Because every team is going to come in here with a game plan. Effort makes up for a lot of things defensively. Effort makes up for a lot of mistakes. But if you’re not playing with great effort, great energy, your mistakes are going to be magnified.”
