The new college football season is almost upon us, with this one set to be the end of an era in many ways. Next year, the conferences are going to look very different, with a lot of teams on the move, plus the playoffs will expand to 12 teams. For now, all we can do is look ahead to the season that is coming as we try to figure out who will win the National Championship. One thing that is certain this season is that we will see at least one team from the SEC make it into the playoffs, but will it be more? We won’t know the answer to that question for a minute, but we are set to make some bold predictions for the SEC Conference in 2023, so let’s get to it.

Georgia Goes Unbeaten Again
The 2-time defending National Champion Georgia Bulldogs come into the season looking for their third straight title, which is something that hasn’t been done since 1936. They are also looking to go unbeaten in the regular season for the 3rd straight year. One of these feats is more manageable than the other, and I believe that Georgia has the talent to go 12-0 in the regular season once again.

Alabama Misses the Playoffs
Georgia is now in the position that Alabama held for so many years in the SEC, with the shift in the balance of power now complete. Seeing the Crimson Tide miss out on the playoffs last year was a bit of a surprise, but is it a sign that the program might be on the decline? I’m not so sure I would go that far, but the margin for error in this conference is slim, and I can see Bama losing 2 games this year and missing out again.

The Hot Seat Warms Up In Florida
I am not going to suggest that Billy Napier will lose his job as the head coach of the Florida Gators this year, but I do think that the hot seat will become uncomfortably warm. Napier got a bit of a pass in his first year on the job, but the time to deliver and improve is now. If the Gators once again stumble to a 6- or 7-win season, there are going to need to be some tough decisions made in Florida.

Tennessee Drops Off
With QB Hendin Hooker now with the Detroit Lions in the NFL, the Tennessee Volunteers have a massive hole to fill in their offense. Hooker was a huge reason why the Vols managed their first 10-win season in years, but he is gone, as are several other key pieces on both sides of the football. I’m not so sure Tennessee has the ability to fill those gaps in the way in which the likes of Georgia and Bama do, so I would not be surprised to see them slip to an 8- or 9-win season.

Watch Out for the Arkansas Razorbacks
Truth be told, the SEC Conference Championship Game will very likely have Georgia and Alabama meeting up in Atlanta, but strange things can happen. I don’t see Georgia coming undone in the East but could there be an upset in the West. A lot of folks have cooled on Texas A&M, with the sexy dark horse pick this season being Arkansas. They are going to be great offensively again, and if they can improve on D, they might upset the apple cart.
