The Gators (8-2) upset LSU 16-10 last week to clinch the SEC East Division. LSU had first-and- goal at UF’s 7-yard line with 50 seconds remaining. The Tigers picked up 6 yards on the first two plays, but nothing on their next two. Gators defensive back Marcell Harris and defensive lineman Jordan Sherit helped stop Derrius Guice on the final play to set off a Gators’ celebration. Caleb Brantley forced a Guice fumble earlier in the game inside Florida’s 10-yard line as UF’s defensive rose to the occasion when it had to. David Reese made his second-career start, filling in for injured linebacker Jarrad Davis. Reese led Florida in tackles for the second-straight week with 12, surpassing his previous season-high of 11 tackles that he made against South Carolina. He helped limit LSU to 219 rushing yards, under its season average of 233.6 yards per game, which had ranked third in the SEC. Reese was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week. Florida quarterback Austin Appleby connected with receiver Tyrie Cleveland for a 98-yard touchdown pass to put the Gators up 10-7 in the third quarter. The pass is the longest in Gators history against an SEC opponent, the longest at Tigers Stadium by an opponent, and the second-longest in school history. Eddy Pineiro accounted for 10 of Florida’s 16 points, connecting on field goals of 36, 26 and 34 yards and also adding an extra point. “Our guys played physical and our young guys played old,” said UF coach Jim McElwain, who became the first coach in conference history to go to the league title game in his first two seasons at a school. “It just shocks me that someone would question the Gators.” Redshirt junior safety Nick Washington (ankle) is expected to miss Saturday’s contest against Florida State. Meanwhile, Davis (ankle) and redshirt senior defensive end Bryan Cox Jr. (lower leg) are also expected to miss the contest. Davis, named Monday as one of five finalists for the 2016 Butkus Award, has missed Florida’s past two games with his ankle injury. Starting QB Luke Del Rio remains out. Appleby, a graduate transfer from Purdue who has completed 61.8 percent of his passes overall for 815 yards, 6 touchdowns and 2 interceptions in place of Del Rio.

With a 41-yard gain on his second carry of the day, Dalvin Cook reached 3,987 rushing yards for his career and surpassed the mark held for 20 years by FSU Hall of Famer Warrick Dunn (3,959 yards). Cook, however, was just getting started. He would go on to run for 225 yards and four touchdowns – three in the third quarter. He is the first running back in ACC history to pass the 4,000-yard career rushing mark in only three seasons and ranks third in league history with 4,166 yards, passing Dunn, Raymond Priester (Clemson, 3,966), Mike Voight (UNC, 3,971), Chris Barclay (Wake Forest, 4,032), Robert Lavette (Ga. Tech, 4,066) and LaMont Jordan (Maryland, 4,147) on Saturday. Redshirt freshman quarterback Deondre Francois was 18-of- 28 for 315 yards and a pair of touchdowns. It was Francois’ fifth 300-yard game this season, tying Chris Rix (2001) for second-most by a freshman. Jameis Winston had seven 300-yard passing games in 2013. Sophomore cornerback Tarvarus McFadden got in on the action with a second-quarter interception in the end zone. That interception, McFadden’s nation-leading eighth of the season, led to a Cook score that gave the Seminoles a 21-0 advantage. McFadden is now No. 2 on FSU’s list for interceptions in a single season. He needs four more to catch Terrell Buckley, who had 12 in 1991. The Seminoles and Gators will meet for the 61st time on Saturday, and they’ll play under the lights at Doak Campbell Stadium for the first time since a night game in 2004. The Seminoles have been exceptional against UF since coach Jimbo Fisher took over in 2010, owning a 6-1 record against their rivals from Gainesville.
