The “Big House” in Ann Arbor, Michigan, will be the host site of the Big 10 matchup between the Michigan Wolverines and Maryland Terrapins on Saturday. Both teams enter the conference season undefeated. Maryland has beaten Buffalo, Charlotte, and SMU. Michigan has thoroughly dominated Colorado State, Hawaii, and UConn.
Let’s take a brief look at each of the two teams, and we’ll give you our College Football Betting prediction for this Big 10 conference affair.
A Big 10 Preview on Week 4 | Maryland Terrapins at Michigan
Maryland Terrapins
When it comes to Maryland, it all starts with Mike Locksley and his high-powered offense. The former offensive coordinator for the Alabama Crimson Tide, has made progress with a Maryland program that had struggled in the Big 10. Quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa has thrown for nearly 900 yards in the first three games. With a strong receiving corps, and a running game that is averaging nearly six yards per carry, this offense will be tough for any defense to stop.
Defensively, the Terps haven’t been real strong early on in the season. The defense has given up 10 points to Buffalo, 21 to Charlotte, and 27 to SMU. They have yet to see an offense the caliber of Michigan’s, so it will be interesting to see how they plan to slow down the Wolverines’ attack.
Michigan Wolverines
With Cade McNamara out with an injury, we’re going to see JJ McCarthy under center for Michigan on Saturday. McCarthy brings a different dimension to the Michigan offense, as he can beat you with his feet and his arms. McCarthy has been very accurate this season, completing almost 90% of his passes for nearly 500 yards and three touchdown passes. Between McCarthy and the strong Michigan running attack, this offense can be very good. Michigan boasts one of the best offensive lines in college football, and that has helped them get off to a great start this season.
While they’ve seen very little competition, the Michigan defense has been quite good this season. In their three games, they’ve only given up 17 points, and they shut out UConn last weekend. Maryland’s offense will be much better than any offense they’ve seen this season, so we’ll see how good the Michigan defense is.
Prediction
The Wolverines come into this one as huge home favorites, as they’ve been made a 17.5-point favorite by the oddsmakers. When looking at the betting numbers, we’ve found a few that may lead you to bet a certain way. Maryland is just 6-14 against the spread in their last 20 road games. Michigan is 5-0 against the spread in their last 5 Big 10 games. The Wolverines are also 8-3 against the spread in their last 11 games at home.
Taking all of those numbers into account, we like Michigan in this one. The Wolverines have one of the best teams in the country, and we think they’re going to show everyone how strong they truly are. Many are using the argument that they haven’t played anyone yet, so they want to prove that when they do play some competition, they can handle it. The Wolverines put up a ton of points on the Terps defense and win this one big, covering the spread in the process.
