College Football Week 7 Best Bets
No. 3 Alabama at No. 6 Tennessee (+7.5)
Alabama and Tennessee will meet for the 105th time on Saturday afternoon. The Crimson Tide lead the all-time series, 59-37-8, including a 27-20-1 mark in Knoxville. The Tide earned a 52-24 victory in last season’s contest to extend UA’s winning streak over the Vols to 15 games.
This is the biggest game at Tennessee in years and ESPN College GameDay will be on hand – for the second time in Knoxville in three weeks when Tennessee had previously gone six years since hosting. The big question is whether Tide QB Bryce Young will play. The 2021 Heisman Trophy winner missed last week’s close win over Texas A&M.
“Hopefully we’re going to try to get him ready to play this week,” Coach Nick Saban said Monday. “But this is something nobody can predict how quickly he’ll get an opportunity to do what he needs to do.”
The Aggies had an opportunity to win it on the game’s final play, but quarterback Hayes King’s pass to the short corner of the endzone fell to the ground, moving the Tide to 6-0 on the year and 3-0 in SEC play. Tide QB Jalen Milroe, who made his first career start in the contest, rushed for 83 yards on 17 carries while also adding 111 yards through the air on 11-of-19 throwing and three touchdown passes.
Alabama will be making its 54th appearance overall (35-18, .660) on ESPN’s College GameDay. It marks Alabama’s 45th appearance under Saban (32-12, .727) and the second time this season (at Texas on Sept. 10). The 45 appearances in the Saban era are nine better than Ohio State (36) for the most GameDay appearances since the 2007 season.
The Tide have won 27 straight regular-season games against SEC Eastern Division opponents, dating back to a 35-21 loss at then-No. 19 South Carolina on Oct. 9, 2010. Included in that stretch is a 14-0 record against Eastern Division foes on the road.
Tennessee is off to its first 5-0 start since 2016 and is ranked in the top 10 for a fourth straight week. It’s the first time two AP poll top-six ranked teams will meet in Neyland Stadium for the first time since Sept. 19, 1998, when the No. 6 Vols beat No. 2 Florida, 20-17, in overtime.
The Vols are coming off their best rushing performance of the year, totaling 263 yards on the ground in their 40-13 thumping of LSU. Despite missing its starting left tackle, the offensive line was dominant in the win, allowing for junior running back Jabari Small to rush for a season-high 127 yards and two touchdowns.
No. 7 USC at No. 20 Utah (-3)
Utah is the defending Pac-12 champion but it’s going to be tough for the Utes to get back to that conference title game with a second conference loss already. USC leads the Pac-12 at 4-0 in league play. Saturday’s game will be the eighth matchup between Utah and USC in Salt Lake City with Utah holding a 4-3 advantage.Utah ranks 10th in the FBS in first downs offense (155) and is 14th in scoring offense (40.3 ppg). Through six games, Utah’s defense has 10 interceptions, which ranks third nationally. Utah leads the Pac-12 in passing yards allowed (179.3), time of possession (33:01) and total defense (315.8).
QB Cameron Rising ranks second in the Pac-12 and seventh nationally in ESPN’s QBR (87.7). He’s second in the Pac-12 in passing efficiency (161.3) and third in completion percentage (.690). Rising ranks 17th in the nation in touchdown to interceptions for his career. He is averaging 3.67 touchdowns per interception in his career.
Senior tight end Dalton Kincaid is no stranger when it comes to finding the end zone, scoring 32 receiving touchdowns through 49 career games in Division I football (24 games at San Diego, 25 games at Utah). His 32 career touchdowns lead all active FBS tight ends.
USC is 6-0 to start the season for the first time since starting 6-0 in the 2006 season. That team finished 11-2 overall, with a Pac-10 co-championship, a win over Michigan in the Rose Bowl and a No. 4 final AP ranking. The last USC team to win more games to start a season was the 2005 Trojans which went 12-0 in the regular season before falling to Texas in the Rose Bowl. USC is
