Why Bet on #3 Ohio State Buckeyes?

OSU (8-0) won at Wisconsin on Saturday, 24-10. Marvin Harrison Jr. scored twice on passes from Kyle McCord to lead as McCord completed 17-of-26 passes for two scores and 226 yards. McCord appeared to suffer the injury when a defender landed on his leg at the end of a third-down conversion run in the third quarter but should be fine.

An injury would explain a certain amount of inconsistency. As a right-handed thrower, McCord’s left leg is his plant leg. He struggled at times to put weight on that leg when walking on the Camp Randall Stadium turf, let alone when trying to get enough air under a downfield throw. He entered the day with one interception, in the opener against Indiana, plus one lost fumble against Purdue, but had two picks vs. the Badgers.

Entering Saturday, Pro Football Focus had graded 3.4 percent of McCord’s 205 pass attempts as turnover-worthy plays, which ranked in the middle of the pack in the FBS. The trip to Madison was a step in the wrong direction in that regard, with a new season high in turnovers for the Buckeyes.

“He toughed it out at the end and still hung in there,” Coach Ryan Day said. “When you have a couple of tough plays, the easy thing to do and what most people do is get gun shy. He didn’t do that. He kept swinging. He kept pushing. You could hear him on the sideline before that drive where TreVeyon (Henderson) ran it to make it a two-score game. He was in that huddle getting after the guys. He showed good leadership there.”

Harrison Jr. had six catches for 123 yards and a pair of key touchdowns. He now has 25 receiving touchdowns, tied for fifth most in Ohio State history with Santonio Holmes. TreVeyon Henderson, who returned after missing games with injury, rushed for 162 yards and had a touchdown on 24 carries. He also had four receptions for 45 yards.

“You can just see the difference he makes when he’s out there; the explosiveness, the speed,” Day said of Henderson. “I thought he ran hard tonight. And he’s a weapon out of the backfield … You can do so much with him. Because he has such a great skill set.”

Wide receiver Emeka Egbuka missed the previous two games but was not on the injury report going into Saturday. And yet he did not play against Wisconsin.

Eight games into the season the Buckeye still have yet to give up more than 17 points while only allowing a nation’s best 3.95 yards per play. All told, Wisconsin had 259 yards and scored one touchdown.

Why Bet on Rutgers Scarlet Knights?

Rutgers got bowl eligible with a 31-14 win over Indiana on Oct. 21 in its last game. The Knights scored 10 points on Hoosier special teams mistakes. It rushed for 276 yards and possessed the ball for nearly 38 minutes to IU’s 22. In the second half, Rutgers wore down the Hoosiers with their running game and outscored them 14-0.

QB Gavin Wimsatt rushed for three touchdowns overall, tying Robert Martin (2014 Indiana & 2015 Indiana) for the most by a Scarlet Knight in a Big Ten game. He now has seven rushing scores this season, the most by a quarterback this century. Wimsatt finished with a career-high 143 rushing yards, the most by a quarterback in a game in program history. That included a long rush of 80 yards, the longest for RU since Isiah Pacheco’s 80-yard dash versus Michigan in 2018.

RB Kyle Monangai recorded his fourth 100-yard rushing game of the season, the most by a Scarlet Knight since Paul James in 2013. DB Shaquan Loyal blocked a punt returned 17 yards for a touchdown by DB Eric Rogers. It was the first blocked kick of the season for the Scarlet Knights and 68th under head coach Greg Schiano. It was the 13th touchdown on a blocked punt under Schiano, the last in 2022 versus Michigan.

Rutgers improved to 6-2, its best start to a season since beginning 7-1 in 2012. The six wins are also the most in a season since going 8-5 in 2014. Rutgers is bowl eligible for the seventh time under head coach Greg Schiano and is poised to earn the 12th bowl invitation in program history.

Rutgers won three of its first five Big Ten games for the first time since joining the conference. It was also the second time winning back-to-back Big Ten games at any point, also done in 2017 (Illinois, Purdue). Rutgers matched the program high with three Big Ten wins in a season, also done in 2014, 2017 and 2020.

Rutgers leads the nation in kickoff returns (36.7), ranks fifth in passing defense (160.6), eighth in total defense (277.3), eighth in fumbles recovered (6), 12th in fewest sacks allowed (0.86), 12th in scoring defense (16.0), 14th in fewest penalties (4.29), 15th in red zone defense (0.70), 16th in fourth down conversions (0.73) and 26th in turnover margin (0.57, +4).

RU is outscoring opponents in the fourth quarter by a mark of 79-34. It is 12-1 since 2020 when not committing a turnover in a game.
