Ole Miss Rebels Must Bet Games of the 2022 NCAA Football Season

The Rebels finished last season at 10-3 following a loss to Baylor in the Sugar Bowl, a game in which Ole Miss star Matt Corral left injured and may have contributed to his slide in the NFL Draft to the third round.

Corral ended his Ole Miss career with 8,287 passing yards (No. 3 all-time), 57 passing touchdowns (No. 3), a 67.3 career completion percentage (No. 1) on 614 completions (No. 3) and 912 attempts (No. 4), 9.1 yards per attempt (No. 2), 13.5 yards per completion (No. 6), 11 games with 300 yards passing (Tied No. 3), 9,625 career yards of total offense (No. 3) and 75 total touchdowns responsible for (No. 3). He also ends with 1,338 career rushing yards and 18 rushing touchdowns. He threw a TD pass in 23 of his last 25 games played.

One of Corral’s top wideouts, Braylon Sanders, also is gone. He finished his career 10 career touchdown receptions and 1,453 yards on 69 receptions but Kiffin did add a handful of transfers. Jordan Watkins from Louisville and Malik Heath from Mississippi State should be the best of the lot, UCF’s Jaylon Robinson is a dangerous deep threat and tight end Michael Trigg out of USC should start right away.

Leading rusher Jerrion Ealy also ran out of eligibility. He had 133 carries for 768 yards and five scores last year. The Rebels hit the transfer portal hard at running back as well with Zach Evans (TCU) and Ulysses Bentley (SMU). Those two combined for over 3,000 yards of total offense and 27 scores at their respective schools.

Also departed are offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby (Oklahoma) and co-defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin (Texas A&M). Charlie Weis Jr., who was most recently at South Florida but also worked under Kiffin at Florida Atlantic, was hired as co-offensive coordinator with passing game coordinator John David Baker. Former WKU assistant Maurice Crum will serve as co-defensive coordinator with Chris Partridge, who held the position last season.

The new starting QB will be last year’s backup Luke Altmyer or USC Transfer Jaxon Dart. As a freshman in 2021, Altmyer saw action in five games and completed 54.1 percent of his passes for 192 yards and one TD. Most of that was in the bowl loss. Dart completed 16-of-20 passes for 258 yards, two touchdowns and maybe most importantly no turnovers in the Rebs’ most recent scrimmage. He seemed much more comfortable directing the Ole Miss offense than he did in the spring when he had only recently arrived in Oxford and had a tendency for throwing interceptions. Altmyer fared worse in the scrimmage going 13 of 20 for 126 yards without a score.

So far, it’s been Altmyer and Dart splitting reps between first- and second-team offense. It most likely will be Dart as he has a higher ceiling. Last season with the Trojans, Dart finished with 1,353 yards, nine touchdowns, and five interceptions when he replaced Kedon Slovis due to injury. As a senior in high school, he was the National Gatorade Player of The Year. He passed for 4,691 yards with a Utah state record 67 touchdowns and only four interceptions. Dart also rushed for 1,195 yards and 12 touchdowns. He was also the Max Preps National Player of the Year and considered to be one of the best players in Utah state history.

Ole Miss offensive lineman Nick Broeker has been named to the preseason watch list for the 2022 Outland Trophy, given annually to the best college football interior lineman in the FBS. Broeker, a preseason All-America selection, is yet to miss a game in his collegiate career. He started all 13 games at left tackle in 2021, playing in nearly all offensive snaps (927). Broeker allowed just two sacks in 497 pass blocking snaps, paving the way for the sixth-ranked total offense (492.5) in the country, as well as the No. 12 rushing offense (217.6).

After transferring to Ole Miss from Central Michigan, Rebel linebacker Troy Brown has landed on the 2022 preseason watch list for the Butkus Award. Brown, a three-time first-team All-MAC selection, started 30 career games for the Chippewas over the last four seasons. Brown finished his career at CMU with 215 tackles, 31.5 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, five interceptions and three forced fumbles.

Ole Miss is a lock to go 4-0 out of conference with an easy schedule but probably will lose at Texas A&M, vs. Alabama and at Arkansas at a minimum in the SEC. Maybe at LSU, too.
