2023 College Football Odds: Playoff Teams That Will and Won't Make It

2023 College Football Odds: Playoff Teams That Will and Won’t Make It

This season will mark the end of an era in college football in more ways than one. This will be the last time that we have a 4-team playoff, with the postseason expanding to 12 teams starting next season. It is also the last time we will see the conferences look the way they do now. We have a host of teams moving to different conferences, with is leaving one Power 5 conference on the brink of total collapse. Our focus here is on the playoffs and the 4 teams that could potentially make it in. We are going to break it down using the Power 5 conferences as a NCAAF betting guide, as that is where the 4 teams are likely to come from, so let’s get to it.

ACC

It is no real surprise to see the Clemson Tigers in as the favorite to win the ACC, even though they have failed to make it to the playoffs in each of the last 2 seasons. They are not going to have it all their way again this season, though, as the Florida State Seminoles look like a legit threat. I still think the Seminoles are a year or two away from making it to the postseason, so Clemson looks like the team most likely to make the postseason, but even that is not something I can say with certainty.

Big 12

This season will be the last hurrah for both Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners as part of the Big 12, as they will be jumping to the SEC next year. The Longhorns are the clear favorite to win the conference, with Oklahoma and Kansas State hot on their heels. This could be a fun conference to watch this season, but it also might be a little dog eat dog. I have a sneaking suspicion that the Wildcats might spring the mild upset and have the best shot at making the top 4.

Big Ten

More often than not, the Big Ten comes down to the matchup between Ohio State and Michigan, with this year figuring to be no different. Michigan has made it to the playoffs in each of the last 2 seasons, but I think we might see that run come to an end this time around. I am on Ohio State to win the conference and make it into the postseason.

PAC 12

As sad as it is, this might well be the final season for the PAC 12, as teams are bolting left and right to move to other conferences. By the time this season comes to an end, there will only be 4 teams remaining in the conference, assuming they don’t move on, too. The PAC 12 has not been anywhere near the playoffs for a minute, but I think USC has a legitimate shot.

SEC

The Georgia Bulldogs, who have won the National Championship in each of the last 2 seasons, look like a solid pick to be in the postseason once again, as I don’t think they really have a legit contender in the East Division. Alabama is looking to bounce back in the West, but the road to the playoffs now goes through Georgia. The SEC does routinely send 2 teams to the postseason, so that trend might just hold.
