A season ago, the Stanford Cardinal won just three College Football games. It was the second straight season that David Shaw won three games for the Cardinal, and now the program is 14-28 in their last 42 games spanning four seasons.
That’s coming after a run of 10 straight seasons to a bowl game. So, the Cardinal program has taken a hit and is one they are trying to get out of.

Stanford Cardinal Starting the 2023 Season
Now Troy Taylor comes to town as the new head coach. Taylor is familiar with the Stanford program after spending 38 games as the head coach at Sacramento State. Taylor will see faces that are new to the program all over the field. Just five guys return from last season that started for the Cardinal.
As the fall arrives, the Cardinal have a bit of a quarterback battle in play. Ari Patu and Ashton Daniels, along with Justin Lamson and Myles Jackson, will all compete for the role. This may be ever-changing until Stanford finds the right fit.
But the running back situation looks to be healthy with E.J. Smith returning, and tight end should be solid with Benjamin Yurosek returning. Yurosek is in a great spot, as Taylor’s offenses have always been set up for tight ends to succeed.
The Stanford defense was one of the worst in the nation last season, as they allowed opponents to score more than 32 points per game. David Bailey is a name you need to know, as he will be the party in the backfield for the Cardinal. He picked up 46 total tackles a season ago.
The new defensive coordinator for Stanford did great things during his time at Wisconsin. The Cardinal will welcome Gaethan Bernadel to campus as he transfers from Florida International. He should get a chance to play as a linebacker.
Stanford starts the season on the road for back-to-back games before welcoming Taylor’s old program to town.

Despite being a down program, the Stanford Cardinal still starts the season as a road favorite. The Cardinal go to Hawaii, where they sit at -8.5 for this game.
Oddsmakers are looking at this game being somewhere like 35-27 Stanford, or even 34-24, somewhere around there. Stanford SHOULD win this game, but a road test to start the season with an inexperienced group is never easy.
