With the start of the college football season now almost upon us, we are somewhat heading into uncharted territory.
Not only do we have a number of teams playing in new conferences this season, we also have an expanded playoff setup, with no less than 12 teams making it into the postseason this year.
My Analysis
Only one team can do that, though, with the usual favorites sitting atop the bookies board.
The team that wins it all could well end up going unbeaten all the way, just as Georgia and Michigan have done in recent years, but which teams have a shot at going unbeaten tis regular season, and how far can they go?
^Georgia Bulldogs
You have to start out by talking about the Bulldogs, who look to be the class of college football, never mind just the SEC. In Carson Beck they have an NFL ready QB, as well as a depth of talent at every position. The Bulldogs do have a tougher schedule than most, but they still have a shot at 12-0.
^Oregon
This will be the first season in the Big ten for the Ducks, and while that means tougher opponents, this is another team that looks stacked from top to bottom.
They also have the majority of their bigger games at home, with just one game against a nationally ranked team on the road.
An unbeaten season will be tough to achieve, but Oregon has all the tools to do it and make a deep playoff run.
^Big Ten
Staying in this Conference, you have a feeling that Ryan Day has something to prove with the Ohio State Buckeyes, who have been bested by Michigan over the past few seasons.
The Buckeyes have reloaded, and with Jim Harbaugh now back in the NFL, they might just be ready to wrestle back conference control.
Week 1 will give us a good idea of what to expect from the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, as they will open against Texas A&M Aggies in what looks to be easily their toughest game of the season.
They will also face Florida State and Louisville later in the year, but with both of those games coming at home, you like their chances to get the win.
The new 12-team playoff could benefit Notre Dame more than most.
Okay, we also have to look at the group of Five teams when trying to figure out who might go unbeaten, and we have a couple of teams that could potentially do it.
The James Madison Dukes had a stellar season last year before falling to Appalachian State, and while they have a new coach and some new personnel, they still look very strong.
^Liberty Flames
Another team to keep an eye on here is the Flames, as they have already proven they can go the unbeaten route, doing it last season.
This is a team that could well be knocking on the door of the playoffs if they can repeat that 12-0 mark from last year.
