The Trojans in 2022

2022 was the first year of the Lincoln Riley project, and you have to say that he did a very solid job in his first season as head coach. So much so that the expectations are that the Trojans should be taking the next step into the playoffs this time around. The only regular season loss that they took last year was a thrilling 43-42 defeat at the hands of the Utah Utes. They then lost to that same team, albeit in blowout fashion, in the PAC Conference Championship Game before losing another thriller to Tulane in their bowl game.

 

Betting Odds for the Trojans in 2023

When Riley was the coach of the Oklahoma Sooners, he built a team that was an offensive powerhouse, but which had some serious issues on defense. Yes, we are just one season into the Trojans project, but there are signs that he is building a similar model. The Trojans, led by Caleb Williams under center, are fun to watch, but they need to rack up points to bail out a porous defense. The win total for the Trojans is set at 10 this season, and while that number is manageable, it only happens if the D tightens up.

The next thing to consider is how the Trojans might make out in the battle for conference supremacy. As it stands at the moment, they are the favorite to win the PAC 12 at odds of +204, but they have the Ducks and the Washington Huskies sitting right on their shoulders. This is going to be an epic battle to win the conference, especially when you consider that USC will play the Ducks and the Huskies in the final 2 weeks of the season. In fact, their final stretch of games is brutal, with Notre Dame and Utah also on their list in the final 5 weeks of the season. If they can survive that run, they could well win the conference.

If you look at the recent National Champions, you see teams that are balanced on both sides of the football. That certainly doesn’t describe this USC team, but they are fairly high on the bookies board right now, sitting at +1425 to win the Natty. It might be worth a risk, but I just don’t see them getting there unless there are some major defensive improvements.
