Over the past few years, the way in which college football operates has changed. It all began with adding a playoff, followed by the transfer portal, NIL money, teams jumping to different conferences. Of those changes, it is perhaps the playoff setup that has been the most in the spotlight, with many fans looking to see things expanded. Those fans will get their wish, with the playoffs set to expand t 12 teams starting in the 2024 season. That change will mean that bowl season will look a little different, but for now, it all remains the same and we will get things rolling on December 16. There are two games set for the opening day of bowl season, one of which looks to be a very good one. We are talking about the Cure Bowl, which will be played in Orlando, Florida and will feature a pair of conference champions. Let’s look at the teams and how they got there.
Let’s take a look at this analysis for your NCAAF bets.Who is Playing Cure Bowl?
UTSA Roadrunners
The Roadrunners gave themselves a difficult start to the regular season, choosing to play a pair of ranked opponents in their opening 3 games. They lost both of those outings to get out to a 1-2 start, but they never looked back after that. They reeled off 9 straight wins, which included going a perfect 8-0 in conference play. They closed out the season with a huge 48-27 win over North Texas in the Conference USA Championship Game, their second straight win in that game. Their offensive outburst in the championship game was not that surprising given that they averaged over 38 PPG during the regular season. The defense was a little shaky at times, giving up a touch over 26 PPG. The Roadrunners went 7-6 ATS and were 8-5 O/U.
Troy Trojans
The Trojans took a very similar path to their Cure Bowl opponent, but they did things just a little differently. Like the Roadrunners, Troy has a rough start to the season, going 1-2 to get the ball rolling. Also like UTSA, they became unbeatable after that point, winning 10 in a row, including a win over Coastal Carolina in the Sun Belt Championship Game. This is not a team that is going to wow you with their offensive output, as they averaged roughly 26 PPG this season. Where they are tough, though, is on the defensive side of the football, as they gave up a touch over 17 PPG this season, which is an outstanding number. The Trojans went 10-3 ATS this season, while also going 6-7 O/U.
Betting and Prediction
It’s the unstoppable force against the immovable object in this one, which makes it a very intriguing matchup indeed. The bookies seem to agree, as they have Troy in as a 1-point favorite right now, with the point total for the Cure Bowl set at 54 ½. If that Trojans offense plays the way they have all season, getting to the OVER might be tough. I think they can do that, which is why I like the Trojans to win and cover, but I would keep an eye on odds changes between now and the start of the game.
