Vingegaard grabs the yellow jersey

The weekend could determine which cyclist, Jonas Vingegaard or Tadej Pogacar, wears the yellow jersey heading into the Tour de France’s final week. Vingegaard grabbed the lead over Pogacar at Stage 11.

As they head into Saturday, the two cyclists with the best chances of winning the general classification yellow jersey look tough to beat. Jonas, Jumbo-Visma’s top cyclist, has a 2 minutes and 22 seconds lead over the Slovenian.

Pogacar attempted to make two moves at Stage 12 to cut the gap, but failed in both attempts. Vingegaard should carry the lead into Saturday’s Stage 14.

Although Pogacar and Vingegaard deserve our attention, and it’s likely one of the two will win the GC, we shouldn’t take our eyes off Britain’s Geraint Thomas.

The former Tour de France winner is 2 minutes and 26 second behind Vingegaard. Thomas is just 4 seconds behind Pogacar. There’s a lot of racing left.

So if Vingegaard stumbles, Thomas might have a shot. The UK’s best hope at a Tour victory can make up 4 seconds no problem.

No doubt, the most honorable team effort this Tour goes to Primoz Roglic. The pre-race second choice relentlessly attacked Pogacar at Stage 11, opening the door for Jumbo teammate Vingegaard.

At the end of the stage, Roglic said, “I cracked myself but I didn’t care.” Kudos to Roglic who decided that his sliver of a hope of winning the yellow jersey wasn’t as important as a Jumbo-Visma general classification victory.

If Jonas wins the GC, he owes Primoz way more than a steak dinner.

Van Aert increases green jersey lead, Pogacar continues white jersey lead

Wout Van Aert, another Jumbo-Visma cyclist, has a close to insurmountable lead over Tadej Pogacar. Heading into Friday’s Stage 13, Van Aert had 321 points.

Pogacar was in second with 159. Tadej won’t catch Van Aert and he may not catch Vingegaard. But the Slovenian should continue to wear the white jersey.

Even though Tom Pidcock won Stage 12, becoming the youngest ever to take the victory at the Briancon Alpe d’Huez, Tadej has a 5 minutes and 17 second lead over Pidcock for the jersey that goes to the best young cyclist.

Cofidis cyclist Geschke continues to wear the polka dot jersey

For the polka dot shirt, Simon Geschke should take about a 4 points lead over Louis Meintjes into Stage 14. Geschke has 43 points. Meintjes has 39.

Jonas Vingegaard is in third-place with 36 points. The polka dot, which goes to the top climber, will be up for grabs if Geschke falls.

In addition to Meintjes and Vingegaard, Italy’s Giulio Ciccone and Frances Pierre Latour also have chances. Ciccone and Latour both have 35 points.
