Everything is ready for the 2020 League of Legends World Championship grand finals between DAMWON Gaming and Suning, which will take place on Saturday at the Pudong Football Stadium, Shanghai, China. It will mark the first time since 2017 a Korea team will appear in the finals, and the third consecutive year that a Chinese LoL squad will be vying for the Summoner’s Cup. That being said, let’s take a closer at the upcoming match so you can make your bets against their League of Legends odds.
DAMWON vs SN | LoL World Championship Grand Finals Preview
Throughout the 2020 season, DAMWON Gaming has established itself as a behemoth of League of Legends Champions Korea (LCK). They did not fail to showcase their terrifying strength during the LoL World Championship, either. After locking in the first spot in their group ahead of JD Gaming, Rogue and Talon Esports, DAMWON Gaming went on to demolish their regional rivals DRX (3-0) in the quarterfinals. They also made a serious statement by humiliating G2 Esports by closing out the semifinals bout (3-1) with the fastest victory (19 minutes, three seconds) in Worlds’ history.
It should not come off as a surprise DAMWON Gaming is entering the grand finals as the main favorites to lift the Summoner’s Cup, and there are two reasons for that. Their biggest strength comes from their strong solo laners, namely their mid laner Heo “ShowMaker” Su and top laner Jang “Nuguri” Ha-gwon, who will play the main win condition for the Korean squad.
Even though DWG’s duo have had objectively better performances than their Suning counterpart in Xiang “Angel” Tao and Chen “Bin” Ze-Bin, that does not take away from the pressure put on DWG’s laners to not only perform but outclass their opponents and set their team up for success. Another thing working in favor of DAMWON is that while they are expected to gain an early lead over Suning due to their laning strength, the Koreans are also renowned for their brilliant late-game macro and the ability to fight from behind.
Suning’s win condition is similar to that of DAMWON Gaming in a way that they will need to do their best to protect Angel and shut down ShowMaker in the mid lane. The same can be said for the top lane matchup since shutting down Nuguri would definitely boost Suning’s chances of winning.
We did not talk much about the bottom lane and jungle matchups so far, mostly because we believe Suning could potentially match up nicely in both. Lê “SofM” Quang Duy is looking like one of the best junglers in the world and is on top of that more than capable of solo carrying his team to victory.
Much of the same holds true for Suning’s ADC Tang “huanfeng” Huan-Feng, who has impressed many this tournament – especially on his Jhin pick. He is widely regarded as the main point of power for Suning, and as long as the League of Legends Pro League (LPL) squad can play around him, Suning could be a real threat for DWG.
Prediction
Based on the balance of power in the lanes, it seems highly likely DWG will play around the bottom lane, shut down huanfeng, and look towards Nuguri and ShowMaker to justify their tag as the better laners. Additionally, we can expect DWG to ban huanfeng’s Jhin, which would effectively leave him with only Ezreal as his second-favorite pick.
While we can look at this match from both sides, DAMWON Gaming is still the stronger team and is not surprisingly priced as heavy favorites over Suning. With all due respect to Suning, their incredible performances this season, and an incredible success story, a lot will have to go right for them to defeat DAMWON Gaming. The latter has been showing world championship-quality play for most of the 2020 season.
All of the last three LoL World Championship finals have ended in 3-0 sweeps. While that does not necessarily mean this year won’t be an exception, the quality gap between the two sides makes it seem highly believable we might be in for another 3-0 victory.
