Top 2021 Overwatch League Play-In Matches to Wager on September 4

Paris Eternal vs Washington Justice

  • When: Saturday, September 4 – 12:00 PDT

Paris Eternal and Washington Justice will clash on Saturday, September 4, in the first round of the Western Division Play-In stage. Paris Eternal enter the match as the underdogs, priced at around +120, while Washington Justice are priced as -166 favorites.

The offered betting odds don’t make much sense, at least in my book. Although Washington Justice have had some flashes of greatness over the season, I would rank them as one of the worst teams in the league based on their recent showings.

That might seem like a harsh assessment, but I have to put more weight on what the Justice have produced in their most recent games over what we have seen from them over the entire season.

If we look at Justice’s showings during the Countdown Cup, they were anything but convincing. Justice got swept three times – against Los Angeles Gladiators, Houston Outlaws, and Toronto Defiant – and only found success against Vancouver Titans (3-0).

Even in their win against the Titans, Justice didn’t look great, which isn’t too inspiring considering the Titans are one of the weakest teams in the league.

If Justice don’t improve, I can’t see them making it past Paris Eternal, even though the French side aren’t exactly a top-tier team. Still, I would rank them as one of the top-10 teams in the league heading into the Play-Ins.

Despite their struggles in the current meta, Eternal still made it into the knockouts of the Countdown Cup with pure determination, resilience, and willingness to keep on pushing. What’s more, their only bad performance was against Boston Uprising, while the remaining bouts ended in either a win or a very close loss.

There is a world where Justice wake up and defeat Eternal, but based on what we have seen from these two teams in recent weeks, I have to favor Eternal, who shouldn’t be priced as the underdogs for this bout.

Prediction: Paris Eternal to win

Boston Uprising vs Toronto Defiant

  • When: Saturday, September 4 – 13:30 CEST

Toronto Defiant surprised during the Countdown Cup, and while they had to settle for a fifth-eighth place finish, there is no shame in losing to Atlanta Reign (1-3) in the semi-finals. Defiant picked up a couple of impressive wins along the way and had a few clutch moments, which was a nice change from what we have seen over the last few months.

Over the last two tournaments, the Defiant looked like a lost cause, but they have seemingly found their stride just in time to make some noise in the playoffs. Can they keep their wheels spinning is anyone’s guess, but Defiant have truly produced a product that they can be proud of.

Their next opponents, Boston Uprising, haven’t achieved as much of late. If I had to make a tier list, Boston Uprising would sit somewhere around 15th, which is a fair assessment if we only include their performance during the Countdown Cup.

Uprising had a strong start and blew out Paris, but it seemed like that was their peak. Since then, everything went downhill for the Uprising, who couldn’t find any serious traction. And let’s not forget that they got swept by Vancouver Titans, which is unacceptable.

Much of Boston Uprising’s struggles come due to their poor read on the meta, which won’t do them any favors as they try to qualify for the 2021 OWL postseason. They have plenty of time to work on their flaws, but even if they improve their team composition, I am not convinced that Boston will improve by a lot since they still lack flexibility.

It would be fair to say that Boston are lucky even to make it into the Play-ins. They wouldn’t have gotten here had Florida Mayhem performed better in the final tournament of the year.

Neither team is very good, but we have to favor Toronto Defiant for this match. They’re flawed but not as bad as Boston Uprising.

Prediction: Toronto Defiant to win
