The Los Angeles Dodgers already have clinched the NL West title so the only path to the playoffs for both the San Francisco Giants and Arizona Diamondbacks is via the wild card. Both still are contending for a spot as they open a huge series Tuesday in the desert with the Snakes favored on the MLB odds.

Why Bet on San Francisco?
The Giants, who are currently just on the outside of the wild-card race looking in, avoided what would have been a disastrous four-game sweep in Colorado with an 11-10 win on Sunday, nearly blowing a nine-run lead, to snap a nine-game road losing streak. It was the team’s longest away skid since dropping 12 consecutive road games from June 21-July 12, 1996.
Mitch Haniger went 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI. Haniger plated a run in the fifth with his first double of the game and then two more in the sixth with another two-bagger. It was just his second multi-hit game since returning from the injured list Aug. 29. In his 16 games back, Haniger is slashing just .163/.241/.408 and has a 31.5 percent strikeout rate.
“Honestly, every single game the rest of the season is the biggest game, right?” Haniger said. “Unfortunately, losing three of four here is not ideal, and we had some tough ones. But to leave here with a win was really important.”
Thiaro Estrada went 2-for-5 with one RBI, one stolen base and one run scored. Estrada has five multi-hit efforts over his last 11 games, going 15-for-46 (.326) in that span. He’s also logged three steals, two home runs and six RBI over those games.
The second baseman continues to be one of the Giants’ best hitters with a .277/.319/.423 slash line, 12 homers, 47 RBI, 61 runs scored and a career-high 22 steals over 108 contests. Estrada currently paces the team in both hits and stolen bases and is on track to become just the seventh Giants player to lead his team in hits and stolen bases in back-to-back seasons.
It’s Alex Cobb (7-6, 3.62 ERA) on the mound Tuesday. He last pitched on Sept. 11 vs. Cleveland, allowing just a pair of unearned runs on three hits in his five frames. The 35-year-old walked one and struck out two on the night. The damage done against him came in the third inning, as Jose Ramirez reached on an error to extend the inning, then Josh Naylor slugged a two-run homer. Cobb exited with the Giants leading after five innings and in line for a victory, but the Giants’ bullpen couldn’t pull it out for him. He carries a 3.62 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 130/36 K/BB ratio (149 1/3 innings) into this one.
Cobb was originally slated to start during a doubleheader Saturday against the Rockies, but the team opted to give him extra rest, as he’s been managing a hip issue of late. Cobb has been bothered by a balky hip since his 131-pitch complete game on August 30 but should avoid off-season surgery.
Even if the Giants miss the playoffs, Giants chairman Greg Johnson has said that president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi and manager Gabe Kapler “will both be here next year.”

Why Bet on Arizona?
Arizona currently holds down an NL wild card spot. The Diamondbacks impressively swept three games at home over the weekend against fellow playoff contender Chicago. Ketel Marte went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run, a double, a walk and an additional run scored in Sunday’s 6-2 win over the Cubs. Marte has had a strong September, hitting safely in 12 of his 15 games. He’s gone 17-for-58 (.293) this month while producing nine RBI and nine extra-base hits. The second baseman is up to a .274/.355/.483 slash line with 23 homers, 77 RBI, 89 runs scored and six stolen bases overall.
Christian Walker went 0-for-4 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored Sunday. The Diamondbacks’ RBI leader delivered runs in each of the last two games, after going eight straight games without driving in a run. Walker is batting .180 (11-for-61) over 17 games in September, however.
“It’s part of being a professional, knowing your situation and what you need to do to get in [to the postseason],” Walker said after Sunday’s win. “But also understanding how quick things can change with these series coming up. Even these next two games against the Giants, we’re still out for blood. It’s not about doing enough; we’re trying to win out. We want to give ourselves a no-doubt chance, and we understand how hard it is and how quickly things change.”
Before Sunday’s game, reliever Scott McGough was placed on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation. Bryce Jarvis was called up to replace him and immediately pitched in Sunday’s win.
It’s ace right-hander Zac Gallen on the mound Tuesday. Gallen (15-8) took the loss against the Mets last, allowing seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and two walks while striking out four batters over five innings. Gallen clearly didn’t have his best stuff, as he served up four extra-base hits, including a two-run homer to Mark Vientos.
“I just didn’t feel like I was particularly sharp,” Gallen said. “I just wasn’t putting them in spots where I needed to, wasn’t putting guys away in certain spots. … Just didn’t make pitches, didn’t execute.”
Wednesday’s outing was his third over his past four starts in which he’s given up at least five earned runs. The recent rough patch has pushed his season ERA up to 3.50, nearly a run higher than the 2.54 mark he posted last year. He is 1-0 with a 3.29 ERA in two starts this year vs. the Giants.
