This weekend, Aqueduct runs the Grade 2 Sands Point over the turf and Keeneland runs the Grade 1 QE II Challenge Cup. Both of this week’s top graded stakes happen on Saturday.

The action starts the day before on Friday when Keeneland runs the Grade 3 Sycamore.

Top Stakes Races Second Week of October: Friday, October 13th – Sunday, October 7th, 2023

Sycamore Stakes | Grade 3

1 ½ miles on turf – 3 year olds & up
Friday, October 13th, 2023
Keeneland Race Course, Lexington, Kentucky

Charles Appleby trained Bold Act will attract action. The Godolphin standard bearer is in decent form after winning Prix Nureyev in the last.

If Bold Act doesn’t go off the chalk, Highest Honor or Tawny Port will. Highest Honor is a Chad Brown trained runner while Tawny Port hails from the Cristophe Clement barn. Clement doesn’t run his horses unless he believes he can win.

Others expected to break from the gate include veterans Red Knight, Therapist, and Channel Maker. Channel Maker, if allowed to get an easy lead, is a gate to wire threat.

Sands Point Stakes | Grade 2

2022 Spinaway winner Leave No Trace hasn’t run since finishing a disappointing seventh in a race at Saratoga this summer. Leave No Trace will attract action, but she isn’t likely to be the chalk.

Favoritism will either fall to Root Cause, trained by Chad Brown, or Be Your Best, a Horacio de Paz trained miss that finished second in the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks in the last. Thirty Thou Kelvin, and Todd Pletcher trained Alpha Bell will also attract action. Plenty of horseplayers will back Charles Appleby trained Eternal Hope.

Grade 3 Saratoga Oaks winner Elusive Princess should break from the gate the chalk. The Arnold Delacour trained runner finished second in a Grade 1 at Longchamp in May. There’s no reason to believe that Elusive Princess bounces.

Mawj should fight Elusive Princess for the most money. The Godolphin runner isn’t proven stateside but did win the Grade 1 English 1000 Guineas. Other projected runners include Mission of Joy, Safine, Be Your Best, if that one doesn’t go in the Sands Point, Sounds of Heaven, and Lindy.

Knickerbocker Stakes | Grade 3

1 1/8 miles turf – 3 year old fillies & up
Sunday, October 15th, 2023
Belmont Park, Elmont, New York

Rick Dutrow Jr. trained Master Piece should attract the most action. The Mastercraftsman sired runner finished up the track in the Arlington Million. But before that attempt, Master Piece had been running well against decent competition.

High Distinction, St. Anthony, and Chad Brown trained Rock Emperor should also attract action. All three will have a shot to upset Master Piece. Other runners include a couple from the James Toner barn, Commander and Siege of Boston.

Kingmax, Fort Washington, and Wow Whata Summer, which gets the award for best named horse running this weekend, should also break from the gate.

Franklin Stakes | Grade 2

5 ½ furlongs turf – 3 & 4 year old fillies
Sunday, October 15th, 2023
Keeneland Race Course; Lexington, Kentucky

Caravel, no doubt, will break as the favorite. The Brad Cox trained runner finished fourth in the last. But before finishing fourth in the Grade 3 Troy, Caravel had won five straight going all the way back to this race last year.

Wakanaka, Train to Artemus, Twilight Gleaming, and Bay Storm are worth looking to provide the upset. But if Caravel is on her toes, forget it. She should dominate this field.
