Why Bet on Los Angeles?

The Dodgers offense has gone quiet in this series in scoring just two runs in each of the first two games at home, both losses. An order that scored more than 900 runs during the regular season was motivated to put a disappointing loss to the Padres in last year’s National League Division Series behind it. Yet it has been a disaster so far.

Bobby Miller struggled in a losing effort against the Diamondbacks in Game 2 of the NLDS on Monday evening, giving up three runs on four hits in just 1 2/3 innings of work in the 4-2 loss.

J.D. Martinez went 2-for-3 and walloped a solo home run on Monday. The 36-year-old slugger got the Dodgers on the board with a 372-foot solo shot off of Diamondbacks’ right-hander Zac Gallen in the fourth inning. He also singled in the sixth inning but wound up getting stranded at third base. Martinez also drew a walk in the eighth inning but was erased on a double play ball. He’s now 2-for-6 with a solo homer and one RBI through his first two postseason contests in a Dodgers’ uniform.

In all best-of-five postseason series, teams to go down 0-2 have come back 10 out of 88 times. The last team to come back from this hole after losing the first two games at home was the 2015 Blue Jays against the Rangers.

“They’ve gotten the big hit,” said Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy. “In the playoffs, that’s really what matters. We’ve got to get the hit when it matters. They’ve done that several times and we haven’t.”

It’s right-hander Lance Lynn (13-11) on the mound. Lynn allowed two runs over six innings with four strikeouts on Sept. 29 in a win over the Giants in his final regular-season start. Lynn battled some control issues early, walking the first two batters of the game before Wilmer Flores drove in a run with a base hit. Flores would get to Lynn once again in the third with a solo homer. Lynn would settle in for three more scoreless innings, striking out four batters over six frames to earn the win.

The 36-year-old right-hander ended the regular season with a 5.73 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, and a 191/67 K/BB ratio across 183 2/3 innings split across the White Sox and Dodgers. The burly right-hander was inconsistent for the Dodgers after coming over at the trade deadline but did finish with quality starts in three of his last four outings.

Lynn last faced Arizona on July 29, 2020, tossing 6.0 scoreless innings, giving up one hit and two walks while striking out eight in the no-decision. He owns a 6-1 career record across 14 games (12 starts) against the club for a 2.96 ERA (24 ER/73.0 IP) and has fired 6.0+ innings in 10 consecutive outings against the Snakes.

Lynn has a 5-5 career record with a 5.28 ERA (34 ER/58.1 IP) in 27 games (eight starts) in the postseason. In his last playoff outing on October 7, 2021, he tossed 3.2 innings, giving up six hits, five runs and two walks while striking out four in a Game 1 ALDS loss against the Houston Astros.

Ryan Pepiot could piggyback Lynn if he doesn’t look sharp early in the game, but the Dodgers’ goal is to get to Brusdar Graterol, Ryan Brasier and Evan Phillips in the back end of the bullpen. They were all sharp in the Game 2 loss.

Why Bet on Arizona?

The NLDS shifts to Chase Field on Wednesday for the first postseason game at the downtown Phoenix ballpark since the Dodgers completed a three-game sweep of Arizona in the 2017 NLDS. This time, it’s the D-backs with a 2-0 lead, looking to secure their first trip to the Championship Series since ‘07.

“We will take nothing for granted,” said manager Torey Lovullo. “We will continue to stay humble and work very hard.”

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. was the star of the 4-2 win in Game 2 with a homer and two RBI. The 29-year-old outfielder delivered a two-out, RBI single off of Bobby Miller in the opening inning — extending the Diamondbacks’ early lead to 3-0. He then slugged a 387-foot solo shot off of Ryan Brasier in the sixth inning to make it a 4-1 ballgame.

NL Rookie of the Year lock Corbin Carroll singled, walked three times, scored a run and swiped a base. Carroll led off the game by working a six-pitch walk from Bobby Miller. He then came around to score the game’s first run on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Christian Walker as part of a three-run uprising in the frame. He then walked in the second inning, but wound up stranded at first base. The 23-year-old superstar also smacked a two-out single off of Joe Kelly in the seventh inning and swiped third base but couldn’t score. Carroll is batting .500 (7-for-14) with a pair of homers, six runs scored, four RBI and a stolen base in these playoffs.

Ketel Marte went 2-for-5 with a pair of singles, a stolen base and a run scored Monday. He is hitting .278 (5-for-18) with a homer, three RBI, three runs scored and a stolen base through his first four ball games. Paul Sewald closed out the Dodgers in Game 2, working a scoreless ninth inning to earn his third save of the postseason.

It’s rookie Brandon Pfaadt on the mound Wednesday. Pfaadt struggled in his first career postseason start last week, giving up three runs on seven hits in just 2 2/3 innings in a no-decision against the Brewers. The 24-year-old right-hander struck out four batters while issuing one walk. The Brewers utilized a lot of soft contact against him in this one, but Pfaadt also served up a two-run bomb to Tyrone Taylor on an 0-2 pitch in the second inning. He generated an impressive 14 swings and misses on 67 pitches on the night — eight on his fastball — while registering a CSW of 34 percent.

During the regular season, Pfaadt went 3-9 with a 5.72 ERA (61 ER in 96.0 IP) over 3 stints with Arizona spanning 18 starts. Opponents hit .180 (24-for-133) with 47 strikeouts off his sweeper. Pfaadt gave up 10 runs (nine earned) in 8 2/3 frames in two losses to LA during the regular season.

The Diamondbacks likely will have their bullpen ready behind Pfaadt at his earliest struggles. He may have a short leash and the Snakes can turn to right-hander Ryne Nelson or lefty Joe Mantiply early.
