2018 Breeders’ Cup Late Pick 4

 

Leg #1: Breeders’ Cup Mile

  • When:  Saturday, Nov. 3 at 3:36 pm ET

Churchill Downs – Race 8

  • Horses:  1-One Master 12/1, 4-Polydream 5/1, 7-Expert Eye, 8/1, 11-Lightning Spear 20/1, 13-Gustav Klimt 10/1
Because the Mile’s always wide-open, I’m using most of the European horses. If I had to choose only one, I’d go with Expert Eye. The Sir Michael Stoute trained colt only finished 1 ¼ lengths behind Wind Chimes and Recoletos in the Group 1 Prix du Moulin de Lonchamp.

Neither one of those horses are entered here while if one or the other had been entered, they might be odds-on. Expert Eye’s the horse to consider using if you’re singling in Leg #1.

Leg #2: Breeders’ Cup Distaff

  • When:  Saturday, Nov. 3 at 4:16 pm ET

Churchill Downs – Race 9

  • Horses:  1-Champagne Problems 12/1, 7-Midnight Bisou 7/2, 11-Monomoy Girl 2/1
Sounds crazy, but I like Champagne Problems to win the Breeders’ Cup Distaff on Saturday. She almost held off Blue Prize in the Spinster, her jockey Calvin Borel loves breaking from the inside post, and there’s enough pace in this for her closing kick.

Midnight Bisou can also close into a swift pace. She finally beat rival Monomoy Girl in her last, the Grade 1 Cotillion at Parx. Monomoy Girl won the Kentucky Oaks over the Churchill dirt earlier this year. If nobody goes with her, she’ll win this on the lead.

Leg #3: Breeders’ Cup Turf

  • When:  Saturday, Nov. 3 at 4:16 pm ET

Churchill Downs – Race 10

  • Horses:  2-Enable 1/1
The classiest horse in any race during the Breeders’ Cup this year is Enable. She’s won 9 of 10, 5 of those being Group 1 races. She’s pretty much beaten the very best turf horses in the world. Unless she didn’t ship well, doesn’t prefer Churchill’s surface, throws her jockey, or just decides this is the race she doesn’t want to win, she’ll easily handle her competition in the BC Turf.

Leg #4: Breeders’ Cup Classic

  • When:  Saturday, Nov. 3 at 5:44 pm ET

Churchill Downs – Race 11

  • Horses:  1-Thunder Snow 12/1, 2-Roaring Lion 20/1, 5-McKinzie 6/1, 7-West Coast 5/1, 10-Yoshida 10/1, 11-Mind Your Biscuits 6/1
I’m going 6 deep in the Classic. If I had to choose, if I went with a single here, it would be Roaring Lion because he’s won his last 4, all Group 1 races, and has some dirt breeding on his broodmare’s side.

But, because I’m singling Enable in Leg #3, I can use 6 horses to close out my Pick 4. All 6 have a shot. Thunder Snow loves dirt and should get a nice trip breaking from post-position 1. Bob Bafffert’s 2 starters, McKinzie and West Coast, can run to victory here. Yoshida went turf to dirt in his last, the Grade 1 Woodward and won while Mind Your Biscuits won the Grade 3 Lukas Classic Statkes in his last over Churchill’s dirt.

A $1 Pick 4 constructed like above will cost $90. The payout, even if all the chalky horses I have in each leg wins, should pay significantly more than that.
