Gulfstream Park Picks for Friday, June 5

Race 6 – 2:37 pm ET – 1 Mile Turf – $20,000 Allowance Optional Claiming

Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. has a couple in here. Both are capable of winning at overlay odds. We’ll go with 10/1 on the morning line Rhythmia to get it done. The 4-year-old gelding sired by Majestic Warrior goes second time for Joseph Jr. The first race for the high percentage winning trainer didn’t work out so well. But Saffie wins 21% with horses running second time. Also, Rhythmia has 5 wins, 2 seconds, and a third from 10 races at this distance.

Til the End, Saffie’s other runner in this, also has a chance to take top honors. At 15/1 on the morning line, we’d use the Kantharos sired 8-year-old in our exotics no matter what. The form is good enough to put this one in the exacta, though. Joseph Jr. wins 35% after the claim.

8/5 morning line chalk Azrael goes first time for trainer Larry Rivelli. The trainer wins 32% with his first after the claim runners. He wins 28% with runners going third time off a layoff. So, yes, there’s a reason to believe this one takes the sixth at Gulfstream. But Rivelli claims off Chad Brown. It’s hard to see Larry moving this one up all that much.

  • Win: Rhythmia
  • Place: Til the End
  • Show: Azrael

Race 8  – 3:41 pm ET – 5 Furlongs Turf –$25,000 Allowance Optional Claiming

Ralph Nicks trained Cable Channel will offer crazy overlay odds if the 4-year-old colt stays at the 15/1 morning line. The English Channel sired colt finished eighth in his last race by 6 lengths. That was at a mile. Channel shortens up and there doesn’t appear to be any world beaters.

Quarky will look to take this field gate to wire. The 4-year-old gelding didn’t appreciate running in between horses in its last. Quarky threw in the towel as the favorite. If jockey Samy Camacho can get a clear lead on Friday, the 3/1 morning line choice may not look back.

7/5 chalk What’s Inside may go off at around even money. The jockey switch to Paco Lopez makes the favorite an attractive win play. But why drop to $25,000 optional claimers from $62,500 optional claimers? Also, this one can be claimed on Friday. The move doesn’t make a ton of sense.

  • Win: Cable Channel
  • Place: Quarky
  • Show: What’s Inside

Race 9 – 4:13 pm ET – 1 1/16 Miles Dirt – $10,000 Starter Optional Claiming

From 11 starters at the Gulfstream Park meet, trainer Juan Arriagada has just 2 seconds and 2 thirds to show for it. Arriagada could get his first win of the meet on Friday, though, with 10/1 on the morning line Candy Cove. Samy Camacho rides and Cove has won 3 in a row. In its last race, the gelding blitzed its competition by 12 lengths in a 1 mile and 40 yards event at Tampa.

Trapezoid has a real shot to get into the exacta. The 5-year-old Trappe Shot sired gelding has finished third in its last couple of races. The extra 1/16 of a mile could be all this one needs to get back into the winner’s circle. Consider for the win if you’re not sold on the top choice.

If the pace is swift, Areyoutalkintome should at least get a piece. The Matthew Williams trained runner is good enough to win this. But the gelding might prefer a mile as opposed to 1 1/16 miles. Also, this one should be around 5 to 6 lengths behind the field at the second call. That’s a lot of ground to make up at Gulfstream.

  • Win: Candy Cove
  • Place: Trapezoid
  • Show: Areyoutalkintome
