Gulfstream Park Picks for Saturday, May 23

Race 3 – 1:45 pm ET – 6 Furlongs Dirt – $25,000 Claiming

Luis Ramirez trained 3-year-old filly Smitten for Smitty takes a massive drop in class. The Honorable Dillon sired runner goes from $50,000 optional claiming to this straight $25,000 claiming event. The two chalks in this aren’t as solid as some might believe. Jockey Nick Juarez can take Smitty gate to wire at decent odds.

One of those chalks, Let’s Be Honest, drops from $40,000 claimers to this $25,000 level. The 9/5 morning line second choice should race well. She cuts back in distance from a mile to 6 furlongs. Trainer Larry Pilotti wins just 4% with horses going route to sprint, though. That makes it hard to put this one on top.

John Servis trained Well Brush Mytooth takes an even bigger drop. The 7/5 morning line chalk goes from a $100,000 stakes to this claiming event. She could win this. But what’s with the drop? It doesn’t make much sense.

  • Win: Smitten for Smitty
  • Place: Let’s Be Honest
  • Show: Well Brush Mytooth

Race 10 – 5:24 pm ET – 5 Furlongs Turf –$62,500 Allowance Optional Claiming

Fully Loaded has a big chance of winning this event. In his first for Amador Sanchez, Loaded tracked, took the lead, and drew off to an easy win. A repeat of that performance should bury these. Sanchez wins 22% with horses coming back off a victory. If this one is anywhere near the 5/1 morning line odds, we have a right to get excited.

Frenchman Street should grab the lead. The Mike Maker runner breaks from post-position 1. Maker is excellent with these type of runners. That’s why Frenchman Street offers 7/2 on the morning line. The Malibu Moon sired gelding should dominate the other speed in this. The gelding won’t hold off Fully Loaded, though.

Georgina Baxter runner Pay Any Price drops from stakes races into this allowance optional claiming event. Price should go off the favorite. That’s one of the reasons to shun for the win. But the chalk is a must use because Georgina has rocked it this year. She winning at 32% in 2020.

  • Win: Fully Loaded
  • Place: Frenchman Street
  • Show: Pay Any Price

Race 11 – 5:55 pm ET – 1 Mile Turf – $16,000 Allowance Optional Claiming

The last time Lookinlikeaqueen ran at this level, she won. Trainer Ronald Spatz drops the Lookin at Lucky 4-year-old miss from $25,000 optional claiming back to $16,000. That should help her chances. If jockey Miguel Vasquez can make out a trip from post-position 11, Queen could upset at big odds.

Jane Cibelli trained Sun Summers takes a massive drop from $50,000 starter allowance. The Broken Vow sired runner finished second going 1 1/16 miles over Belmont’s turf in her last. She could outclass these on Saturday.

Ghostly Beauty has 3 seconds and a third from 6 races over Gulfstream’s grass. Trainer Mike Maker wins 17% of his turf starts. That percentage is massive because Maker has saddled 2,340 turf starters. Beauty could take this. The odds will be short, though.

  • Win: Lookinlikeaqueen
  • Place: Sun Summers
  • Show: Ghostly Beauty
