MLB Detroit Tigers vs. Minnesota Twins Series: Thursday, June 15 – Sunday, June 18, 2023

Pitching Wins

Game one on Thursday will be Matthew Boyd for the Detroit Tigers against Sonny Gray of the Minnesota Twins. Boyd sits with a 3-5 record on the season, and his earned run average is up to 5.55 on the season. The veteran Gray has been much better for Minnesota, with a 4-1 mark and an ERA of just 2.25.

On Friday, Joey Wentz will toe the bump for Detroit. The youngster has struggled this season and won just 1 of 7 decisions, and has an ERA of north of 7.00 on the season. For the Twins, their stud Joe Ryan will go. Ryan is seeking his 8th win in 11 decisions, and his ERA remains under 3.00, much like Gray.

Saturday and Sunday’s pitching matchups, have yet to be announced. The Tigers are 23rd in runs allowed, just shy of 5 per game, while Minnesota ranks 3rd, giving up just 3.8 runs per game.

Bring the Bats

Both teams are going to need to bring their bats to this series. The Twins are hitting .233 as a team, and are scoring 4.4 runs per game. The top offensive threats for Minnesota in 2023 have been Byron Buxton and Michael A. Taylor, along with Joey Gallo. Those three have double digits homeruns for Minnesota. Carlos Correa and Donovan Solano both have double-digit doubles for Minnesota. The Twins wrapped up a series at Toronto, where they scored 6 runs per game, and won two out of three.

The Tigers saw their veteran Michael Cabrera launch his first home run of the season on Wednesday night. Slugger Javier Baez has struggled at the plate, with just 8 homeruns. Jake Rogers leads the team, and has just 8 on the season. The Tigers, as a team, are scoring just 3.6 runs per game, and their batting average is down to .225 on the season. Before taking on the Braves at home, the Tigers were swept at home by the Diamondbacks. In that series, Arizona outscored them 23-11.

Solid Divisional Series

Despite being divisional rivals, this is the first time these two teams have played each other during the 2023 season. The Twins and Tigers finished the season in October against each other a season ago, and the Tigers won 5-2 on October 2nd, 2022. Look for some fun baseball to be played all weekend, but Minnesota should win 3 out of 4, including the first two of the weekend.
