Don’t Look Now, But Here Come the Atlanta Braves

The Braves will face the Miami Marlins in a three-game series starting on Monday, have an off-day on Thursday, and then they’ll head to Camden Yards in Baltimore for a three-game set next weekend.

When it comes to betting, these two teams are headed in opposite directions, and we like the Braves next weekend.

As for the Orioles, they head into Sunday’s game with a record of 38-78, 40 games below .500. They are currently in last place in the American League East, sitting 32.5 games behind the division-leading Tampa Bay Rays.

Saturday night’s matchup will see Drew Smyly of the Braves take on Baltimore’s Hunter Harvey. Harvey is the son of former Angels All-Star closer Bryan Harvey. Harvey was once a top prospect in the Orioles system, but he has fought numerous injuries early in his career.

Harvey has no record this season and has only thrown just over eight innings. It has been reported that he has a sore shoulder, so we could see a replacement starter.

Drew Smyly has an 8-3 record for the Braves. The journeyman starter has filled in admirably for Atlanta this season as they’ve had numerous starters miss time due to injury. He has pitched well enough to stay in the rotation, and a weak Orioles team could help him to stay there longer.

Sunday, August 22nd Match

Unless changes are made to the rotations, we should see Atlanta’s Touki Toussant and Baltimore’s John Means take the bump on Sunday. Means has been up and down this season. He has a 5-4 record with a 3.21 ERA. He seems to pitch well every other start. He has been the victim of poor run support throughout much of the season.

The Braves will send their young flamethrower to the mound on Sunday. Other than giving up seven runs in three innings to the Brewers, Toussant has had a very nice season. He should rack up a lot of strikeouts against the weak Baltimore lineup.
