Why Bet on Arizona?

The Snakes were 5-1 upset winners in Game 6 to force Game 7. It was the D-backs‘ first elimination-game win on the road (previously 0-4) in franchise history.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. went back-to-back with teammate Tommy Pham in the second inning on Monday, leading the Diamondbacks to victory. Pham opened the scoring with his solo blast off of Aaron Nola to begin the second inning. Gurriel Jr. followed with a 403-foot blast of his own to make it a 2-0 ballgame. The 30-year-old outfielder finished the afternoon 1-for-4 and is now hitting .227 (10-for-44) with two homers, six RBI and one stolen base on the postseason.

The D-backs became the first NL team to hit consecutive homers three times in a single postseason. The only other team to achieve the feat were the 2007 Red Sox, who went on to win the World Series.

Ketel Marte went 2-for-5 with a triple and two RBI. The 30-year-old second baseman smacked an RBI triple off of Nola in the fifth inning that extended the Diamondbacks’ lead to 4-1. He also tacked on a run-scoring single off of Orion Kerkering in the seventh inning that made it 5-1. He also swiped a base in the contest. For the postseason, he’s now hitting.375 (18-for-48) with a pair of homers, seven RBI, six runs scored and a pair of stolen bases.

Marte has at least one hit in 15 straight playoff games, matching Marquis Grissom for the longest streak to open a career in postseason history. Marte is two games shy of the overall postseason hitting streak record, which Hank Bauer (1956-58), Derek Jeter (1998-99) and Manny Ramirez (2003-04) share with 17 in a row. His 18 total hits this postseason are also one shy of the franchise record Steve Finley set in recording 19 during the 2001 playoffs.

It’s rookie Brandon Pfaadt on the mound. Pfaadt recorded a career-high nine strikeouts over 5 2/3 shutout innings last Thursday in the Diamondbacks’ win over the Phillies in Game 3 of the NLCS. Pfaadt authored a masterful performance in his third career postseason start, silencing Philadelphia’s sizzling-hot lineup into the sixth inning, while allowing just two baserunners during that span.

The 25-year-old generated 17 swinging strikes and finished with an elite 41 percent CSW on 70 pitches (48 strikes). He’s allowed just three runs on 11 hits with a 15/1 K/BB ratio across 12 2/3 innings (three starts) this postseason.

Ace Zac Gallen will be available out of the bullpen on Tuesday for Game 7. Gallen threw 93 pitches on Saturday during Arizona’s Game 5 loss at Chase Field, but should be ready to handle an inning or two, if needed. The 28-year-old right-hander has struggled to a pedestrian 5.24 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 13/9 K/BB ratio across 22 1/3 innings (four starts) this postseason.

Why Bet on Philadelphia?

Aaron Nola struggled in a losing effort against the Diamondbacks in Game 6 of the NLCS on Monday afternoon, surrendering four runs on six hits in his 4 1/3 innings of work. Brandon Marsh went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles and drove in the Phillies’ lone run. Marsh plated J.T. Realmuto with an RBI single off of Merrill Kelly in the second inning, trimming the Phillies’ early deficit to two runs at 3-1. That would be as close as they would get. Marsh is having a terrific postseason — hitting .343 (12-for-35) with a homer, four RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases.

Established in 1883, the Phillies are one of the oldest franchises in baseball. Now, in their 141st season, they’ll be playing their first postseason Game 7. A team that has 16 postseason appearances and has played 132 postseason games hasn’t found itself in this exact spot. The Phillies have played in winner-take-all games before. They won Game 5 of the 1980 NLCS vs. the Astros on their way to a World Series title that season. Philadelphia lost Game 5 of the 2011 NLDS vs. the Cardinals and Game 5 of the 1981 NLDS vs. the Expos.

In all best-of-seven postseason series, teams that have won Game 6 to force a Game 7 have come out on top in that winner-take-all contest 34 of 60 times (57%). Teams playing in their home ballparks are only 62-64 all-time in winner-take-all postseason games, including 30-28 in best-of-seven series.

Lefty Ranger Suarez gets the ball for the Phillies. He posted seven strikeouts over 5 1/3 scoreless innings last Thursday in the Phillies’ loss to the Diamondbacks in Game 3 of the NLCS. Suarez set down five consecutive batters to open the contest before giving up a harmless bloop single to Lourdes Gurriel Jr. He wound up allowing just four total baserunners before being lifted in the sixth inning, shortly after giving up a leadoff double to Ketel Marte. Reliever Jeff Hoffman was able to come on and record the final two outs of the frame, keeping the contest scoreless in the process.

Suarez had nine swinging strikes and finished with an elite 39 percent CSW on an efficient 69 pitches (44 strikes). The 28-year-old has allowed just one run on seven hits with 13/2 K/BB ratio across 14 innings (three starts) this postseason.

Suarez’s career 0.94 ERA is the lowest in postseason history (minimum five starts), just ahead of legendary left-hander Sandy Koufax (0.95 ERA).
