Why Bet on Texas?

The Rangers were 3-1 winners in Game 3 on Monday night, easily the lowest-scoring game of this World Series. The win was Texas’ ninth on the road, setting the record for the most road wins in a single postseason, breaking a tie at eight with the 2019 Nationals (one road loss) and 1996 Yankees (none).

All three Texas runs came in the third inning. Marcus Semien went 1-for-4 with a run-scoring single. Semien opened the scoring in the ballgame with a two-out RBI single off of Brandon Pfaadt in the third inning. He then rode home on Corey Seager’s two-run bomb on the very next pitch. Semien has had a rough time at the plate this postseason — hitting just .200 (13-for-65) with zero homers, three RBI and nine runs scored.

Seager’s two-run homer gave the Rangers all the cushion they needed. Seager jumped all over a first-pitch changeup from Brandon Pfaadt, launching a 421-foot two-run shot that increased the Rangers’ lead to 3-0. That would be his only hit in four at-bats on the night. Seager has been a monster for the Rangers during the postseason, hitting .304 (17-for-56) with five homers, 10 RBI and 16 runs scored. Seager’s 18 career postseason home runs as a shortstop are tied for second-most with Carlos Correa. Derek Jeter holds the record with 20 career postseason home runs as a shortstop.

Left fielder Evan Carter (2-for-3, 1 BB) has reached safely in each of his 15 postseason games this year, tying the longest on-base streak in Rangers’ Postseason history held by Elvis Andrus who reached in 15 straight games during the 2010 postseason.

However, World Series MVP Adolis Garcia and starting pitcher Max Scherzer left with injuries. Garcia will undergo imaging on his left torso after grabbing it and leaving following a swing in the eighth inning. Garcia’s injury came after Scherzer, the Rangers’ Game 3 starter, exited in the fourth inning after a spasm flared in his back. Garcia, the American League Championship Series MVP whose 11th-inning home run won Game 1 of the World Series, has been the best player in baseball this postseason. Texas could replace Garcia, Scherzer or both on the roster, though doing so would make them ineligible to come back in the World Series.

García recorded an outfield assist in the second inning Monday, throwing out Christian Walker at home plate to keep the game scoreless. The Rangers have recorded five outfield assists this postseason, tied with many teams for the third-most in a single postseason. The 1999 New York Mets and 1980 Philadelphia Phillies hold the record with seven outfield assists during their postseason runs.

Teams who score first this postseason are now 30-9 (.769) and Texas is now 8-0 when scoring first this postseason. Combined with their regular season record, the Rangers are now 67-26 this season when scoring first. The American League is 259-102 when scoring first in World Series Games. The AL has scored first in 52.3% of 690 World Series games all-time.

Lefty Andrew Heaney will start Game 4 but likely serve as a glorified opener. Manager Bruce Bochy reached the decision after the Rangers made four calls to the bullpen following Scherzer’s early exit in Game 3. Jon Gray (three innings), Josh Sborz (one inning), Aroldis Chapman (one inning) and José Leclerc (one inning) contributed to the 3-1 victory at Chase Field.

“We were able to stay away from a lot of guys because of Jon Gray’s effort and had our leverage guys out there,” Bochy said.

Heaney will look to pitch deeper into Game 4 of the World Series than he did in Game 4 of the American League Championship Series against the Astros on Oct. 19. A starter through early September of this season, the Rangers had hoped for 60-70 pitches. Heaney allowed three runs on four hits and one walk in two-thirds of an inning. Heaney has pitched in relief twice since then. In Game 6 of the ALCS, he put up all zeros in one inning to help force a Game 7. Heaney most recently threw two-thirds of a frame with one hit, no runs and no walks in Texas’ World Series Game 2 loss. Overall, he is 0-0 with a 6.00 ERA across six innings in the postseason.

Why Bet on Arizona?

Geraldo Perdomo went 1-for-3 and drove in the Diamondbacks’ lone run as they fell to the Rangers in Game 3 of the World Series on Monday. Perdomo finally got the Diamondbacks on the board with an RBI single off of Aroldis Chapman in the eighth inning after Emmanuel Rivera had started the frame with a leadoff double. That would wind up being the extent of their offense. Perdomo has been a solid part of the Diamondbacks’ offense from the ninth spot in the order this postseason — hitting .295 (13-for-44) with two homers, four RBI, three stolen bases and nine runs scored.

Second baseman Ketel Marte (1-for-3, 1 BB) hit a single in the sixth inning to extend his postseason hitting streak to 19 games. His 19-game hitting streak which dates back to 2017 is the longest in postseason history, surpassing 17-game streaks by Manny Ramirez, Derek Jeter and Hank Bauer. Marte’s streak is also the longest by a player to begin his postseason career.

The Diamondbacks out-hit the Rangers 6-5 in Game 3. It marked the 15th win of the year for Texas when they were out-hit by their opponent, including regular season and postseason games. The Diamondbacks are now 70-17 this year when out-hitting their opponent. Arizona has swiped 21 bases this postseason, the second-most of any team in a single playoffs. The 2008 Tampa Bay Rays stole an MLB-record 24 stolen bases throughout the 2008 postseason.

Lefty Joe Mantiply gets the start on the mound as a glorified opener. The 32-year-old reliever has made four appearances this postseason, allowing three runs on three hits with a 2/3 K/BB ratio across three innings of work. He posted a pedestrian 4.62 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 28/9 K/BB ratio across 39 innings (35 appearances, three starts) during the regular season.

Mantiply also started Game 4 of the National League Championship Series against the Phillies, with the intent to neutralize Philadelphia’s left-handed sluggers: Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper. Mantiply struck out Schwarber to start the first inning and induced a groundout from Harper to end it. This time around, Mantiply will be asked to slow down the red-hot Corey Seager, who has homered in two of the first three games of the World Series.
