MLB Odds Today: Betting Tips for the Upcoming 2024 Season

With just 2 weeks remaining until the start of the 2024 MLB season, many bettors are starting to think about how to wager

MLB Betting Guide for the Upcoming 2024 Season to Must Consider When Wagering

I am not talking about individual games here, but rather the futures bets that are on the board as we speak. All wagering comes with an element of risk, but futures might be the riskiest of the bunch. The upside is that the sooner you get in on these types of bets, the more likely it is that the odds will be in your favor. For example, if you like a particular team to win a specific division in the MLB and they live up to the hype right from the start, their odds are going to shorten rather dramatically with each passing week. You are not going to get odds that are better than they are now if you wait. With all of that in mind, let’s look at some MLB futures Odds you should jump on now.

Division Winners

Over the course of a 162-game season, there is a lot that can go wrong for teams, but what we have seen over the years is that the best teams have a way of climbing to the top, even when they do suffer some adversity. When it comes to the individual divisions, there are those that are wide open, while others look like a slam dunk for one team or another. It is the supposed slam dunks that you should probably wager on now to get the best available odds.

I believe there are a couple of teams, both in the National League, that you should be jumping on right now. The most obvious choice, of course, is the LA Dodgers, a team that has dominated the West for a decade and who may have actually got stronger over the offseason. The other is the Atlanta Braves, another team that looks like the cream of the East Division. The Dodgers don’t deliver much value at -650, while the Braves are a little better at -275. Maybe consider putting them both on the same parlay ticket.

Making The Playoffs

Winning the division means having an automatic berth into the postseason, but it is not the only route to the playoffs. The Wild Card allows good teams to play beyond the regular season without winning their division, but it also means a more difficult path to the World Series for that group. As the Texas Rangers proved last season, though, it can be done. Simply wagering on a team to make the playoffs offers a reduced payout when compared to taking the same team to win the division, but it is a safer bet for those who don’t want to go all in on a division winner.

So, with that in mind, who should you consider betting on? The obvious answer is to look at the divisions that look set to be strong, and there are clues to that based on last season. The AL East sent 3 teams to the postseason, as did the NL East. Both divisions look to be strong again this season, so why not take a chance on one of those teams? You also have the St. Louis Cardinals, who many believe will make the jump from worst to first. If you are not totally sold on that move, you might consider hedging your bets and taking the Cardinals to make the playoffs as opposed to winning the division.

Win Totals

Prior to the start of every season in the MLB, the bookies assign each team a win total, with your goal being to decide whether said teams will go over or under that total. In terms of simplicity, wagers don’t come more basic than the win total wager, but the fact of the matter is that getting your picks right can be tough. Yes, you can look back at the last 3-5 seasons to see if a team is on the rise or the decline, but you also have to take into account what each team has done in the offseason to try and figure out if they are going to improve or take a backward step.

I don’t usually spend a ton of my wagering dollars on the win total wagers, but I do like to look at each division individually and try to identify one team from each that I think will easily cover or fall well short of the posted totals. Generally speaking, getting 4 of the 6 picks correct will potentially land you in profit, which makes the win total wager one worth having a go on. Of course, you may want to put all your eggs in one basket and settle on a single team to wager on. There is no right or wrong way to go about this bet.

League MVP

The great thing about the MVP future bet is that you have 2 chances to make some money, as each league has their own MVP at the end of the regular season. Now, you might think that choosing the MVP is as easy as focusing on a good team and picking the best player in their lineup, but that is a little flawed. Shohei Ohtani has won it in 2 of the last 3 years while playing with an Angels team that seriously underwhelmed. The feeling is that he will take his game to a whole new level playing with the Dodgers, but there is also a great deal more pressure on him this season.

When it comes to picking the MVP, I tend to look at guys who have been consistently good over the past few seasons, and whose number either stay consistent or get progressively better. I also look at players who are coming off a down season through injury or other issues and who might well bounce back in a big way in the new season. There is always the chance of a dark horse emerging to deliver a stellar season, which is all part of the fun of trying to figure out the MVPs for the season.

2022 MLB Betting Guide for the Upcoming Season

MLB Betting Guide for the Upcoming 2022 Season

With the owners and players union still at odds, we’re not sure if and/or when we’ll see the start of the baseball season. Although they have come closer on some issues, there is still quite a bit of separation between the two parties on numerous issues.

With the owners saying that they can afford to not play some regular-season games, Major League Baseball isn’t in as big of a hurry as the players are to come to an agreement.

If we do get to see some baseball being played this season, the betting public will be ready to place some wagers on “America’s Pastime.” While there are still many big-name free agents available, it’s hard to determine which team is the favorite to win it all.

If you’re betting on individual games in the regular season, here are a few MLB Betting tips and strategies to use when placing your wager.

Will the Weather be an Issue?

We all know that playing baseball in the cold can be troublesome for a lot of players. The ball doesn’t travel as far; the pitchers can’t get as good of a grip on the baseball as they normally do, etc. This leads to fewer runs, so taking the under in many of those games is a good strategy.

Also, another thing to remember about early season games is that the pitching always tends to be ahead of the hitting early on.

When we get to the hot weather months, that’s when we tend to see more balls flying out of the park; thus, more runs are being scored.

Analyze the Starting Pitchers for that game

If an ace is going, that’s a good indication that that team will probably win. Other than that, it’s probably a crapshoot.

We like to do some research on the starting pitchers. When doing your research, be sure to use as much advanced data as possible.

There are numerous places on the internet where you can find breakdowns and analyses of starting pitchers. We like to use the Sagarin data, which gives you more information on that day’s starter.

Jeff Sagarin’s research gives you the most realistic prediction on how that pitcher will do that day. He breaks down numerous statistical categories and gives you an idea of how that pitcher will fare against his opponent for that day.

We also like to take a look at the pitcher’s WHIP (walks plus hits a pitcher gives up per inning). The lower the number, the better. If a pitcher has a high WHIP, that means he’s allowing a lot of baserunners, and that is never a good thing.

Another thing to look at is how that pitcher has done against that team in previous outings. We also like to look at home/road splits and how they’ve pitched in their last few starts.

Does a team have a strong bullpen?

Over the years, bullpens have become much more important. With pitch counts limiting how long a pitcher can go, along with the fact that more pitchers are pitching to strike hitters out rather than allow them to make contact, bullpens are used a lot more. If a starter can go six innings, and then you have two good middle relievers along with a good closer, you’re more likely to place a wager on that team.

Another thing to look at when analyzing a team’s bullpen is its usage rate. If a bullpen is being used too much, the pitchers tend to wear down. This is especially an issue late in the season.

This helps to give you information on how much a pitcher has been used and whether or not that is playing a part on how effective/ineffective a pitcher is.
