MLB Odds and Picks: Pitchers to Avoid in Week 12

MLB Odds and Picks: Pitchers to Avoid in Week 12

We are not yet at the halfway point of the 2023 MLB season, although we are getting close, and there are already a handful of teams who are dead in the water, none of whom are truly surprising. Regardless of how bad things are for those teams, they need to play out the season and watch as their stats get progressively worse. As we look ahead to Week 12, it would be easy to simply target those teams and the pitchers who are getting lit up. While we may have a couple of those types on this list, what we are looking for is mismatches on the mound that might lead to us all making some money, so let’s take a look at 4 pitchers we will be avoiding this week in the MLB betting odds.

MLB Pitchers to Avoid after Week 11 of the season | MLB Lines by MyBookie

Johan Oviedo
Pittsburgh Pirates

After an amazing start to the season, the Pirates are now sinking like a stone, losing 7 in a row heading into Tuesday night. They will face the Chicago Cubs, a team that has won 8 of their last 10 games, including a Monday night tilt versus the Pirates. While the Cubs will have Marcus Stroman on the mound, the Pirates will have Oviedo, who is now winless in his last 5 starts, 3 of which ended with him taking the L. He has taken the loss in back-to-back games, and I would not be surprised to see that run extended to 3 games on Tuesday.

Michael Kopech
Chicago White Sox

In fairness to Kopech, he has not been that bad in his last 2 starts, but he has received almost nothing in the way of run support from the White Sox, who managed just 3 total runs in his last 2 outings. I think we might well see a similar format happen on Wednesday night, with Kopech set to face the high-flying Texas Rangers. Again. This might not prove to be a terrible start, but I’m not so sure the offense can help in any meaningful way, which is why I have to bet against him in this game.

Alex Wood
San Francisco Giants

It’s pretty much slim pickings on Thursday night, which is why I had to go with a pitcher to sit that I’m sure many of you will disagree with. Wood has been lucky in that he has had some fantastic run support from the Giants when he has started. He got the W in his last start, a 15-0 win over the Dodgers, but let’s look at the 3 games prior to that one. He gave up 11 ER in 13.1 innings of work, but he was, for the most part, bailed out by the offense who still found a way to win 2 of those 3 games. That won’t always happen, though, which is why I am betting against him this week.

Luis Ortiz
Pittsburgh Pirates

It was fun to watch the Pirates surprise everyone in the early part of the season, but that seems like a long time ago now, as they are currently on a 7-game losing skid. On Friday, they will be in the road at the red-hot Miami Marlins, and I think they might be in some trouble with Ortiz ser to get the start in that one. The Pirates have only won 2 of the 6 games that Ortiz has appeared in this season, and he is now 1-3 on the year with a 4.30 ERA. I think he could be in for a long night on Friday versus the Marlins.

I have read enough, I need to place my bet now. What to do?
