Why Bet on Boston?

This is the 1st time the Sox will have to travel to the West Coast for a World Series. Prior to 2018, their longest trip for a Fall Classic was to Colorado in 2007.

The Sox took Game 1 of this series 8-4 at home Tuesday and the winner of the Fall Classic opener has gone on to win the World Series 70 times (61.9%), including in 17 of the last 21 years. However, each of the last 2 WS champions lost Game 1 (2016 Cubs, 2017 Astros). Boston won again in Game 2 (4-2).

Why not bet against the Red Sox? They are unbeaten on the road in these playoffs, winning two games at the Yankees and three in Houston. Boston outscored the Yankees and Astros by a combined 40-13 margin away from Fenway Park. Prior to facing the Sox, Houston and the Yankees had been a combined 17-1 in home playoff games in 2017 and 2018.

It’s the Sox’s longest road winning streak in postseason history. They are 1 of only 7 teams ever to win 5+ consecutive road games in a single postseason (1st since the 2014 Royals). The only teams to win as many as 6 straight road games in a single postseason are the 2005 White Sox (went 6-0) and 1996 Yankees (went 8-0), who both went on to win the World Series.

So who is starting Game 3 for Boston? Rick Porcello. Porcello gave up four runs on seven hits with one walk over four innings in a no-decision against the Astros in Game 4 of the American League Championship Series. Porcello worked in and out of trouble through his four innings of work, but ultimately two long balls from George Springer and Tony Kemp sealed his fate.

The right-hander allowed one run, no walks, and five hits in his first three appearances of the postseason, but his 2018 playoff ERA is now 7.20.

Why Bet on LA Dodgers?

The Dodgers are 6-13 in their previous 19 World Series and are 48-65 (.425) overall in those contests. The last time the Dodgers lost Game 1 and then came back to win the World Series was in 1981, when the club dropped Games 1 and 2 to the Yankees in the Bronx, before storming back to win four consecutive games.

One good thing about Game 3 for L.A. is that it will face a right-handed starter and that means some of its biggest bats – who are left-handed — will get off the bench and starts. Manager Dave Roberts went with an all right-handed hitting lineup in Game 1 and mostly so in Game 2.

Someone like outfielder Joc Pederson, for example, should start Game 3. Of Pederson’s 25 home runs during the regular season, eight were leadoff shots (11 career), giving him the franchise record for leadoff homers in a single season. The previous mark of seven was held by Davey Lopes (1979). Pederson’s eight leadoff home runs were tied with Atlanta’s Ronald Acuña Jr. and St. Louis’s Matt Carpenter for second in the Majors this year, trailing only Cleveland’s Francisco Lindor.

Red Sox vs Dodgers Game 3 is going to be a battle.

L.A. will go with right-handed rookie Walker Buehler on the mound. He finished the regular season 8-5 with a 2.62 ERA (40 ER/137.1 IP) in 24 games (23 starts) while striking out 151 batters against just 37 walks and limiting the opposition to a .193 average.

Buehler had the lowest WHIP (0.92) among rookie pitchers with 20 or more starts since 1913, and the second-lowest opponents’ OBP (.249), behind just Dick Hughes’ .248 mark in 1967 with the Cardinals. His.185 opponents’ batting average also ranked the fourth lowest, while his .531 opponents’ OPS was the fifth lowest.

Buehler pitched in Game 163 against the Rockies and recorded the win to help the Dodgers secure their sixth straight NL West Title, after allowing just one hit over 6.2 innings with three strikeouts. He will face the Red Sox for the first time in his career in Game 3. In four career starts in Interleague play (all this season), he has gone 2-0 with a 3.10 ERA (7 ER/20.1 IP) and has struck out 25 against seven walks. Buehler held hitters to a .218 average and posted a 1.18 WHIP.
