Reds vs Mets MLB Spread, Game Info & Pick for Tuesday Night

Written by on April 30, 2019

At the start of every new season, hope springs eternal for every single team in the MLB. Sure, there are definite favorites and extreme underdogs to be found when you look at the odds to win the World Series, but there are always a couple of teams that come out of nowhere to confound the bookies and upset the odds. That said, there are also teams that live up to the favorite label, as well as a few that play as poorly as we expected them to. To get this week rolling, we have a couple of teams that fit some of the bills that we have discussed.

The New York Mets were not really expected to be a serious contender, but in the early going, they are more than holding their own in the NL East. The Cincinnati Reds were expected to struggle, which is exactly what they are doing, but we will get to see one of their bright lights play in this one, with Luis Castillo on the mound. His start alone makes the Reds a 1 ½ run favorite for this one, with the total set at 8.

Why bet on the Cincinnati Reds?

At 12-16 and at the bottom of the heap in the NL Central, the Cincinnati Reds are exactly where we thought they would be. That said, they are perhaps a little better of than most expected, and they are in fact on a decent little run of form at the moment, winning 6 of their last 10 games, including picking up a 5-4 win over the Mets in the opening game of this series.

That victory was a pleasant surprise for a team that has not experienced a lot of joy away from home, going just 5-10 SU in 15 road games this season. They have been good against teams from the NL East, going 6-1 in their last 7 against those teams. they also seem to enjoy being the favorite, winning 4 of their last 5 with that label. They have a real shot at improving on all of those records with Luis Castillo (3-1, 1.23 ERA) on the mound for this one.

Team Stats

Offense
  • Runs: 3.79
  • Hits: 6.82
  • Walks: 2.96
  • Strike Outs: 8.71

Defense

  • Runs: 3.39
  • Hits: 7.57
  • Walks: 3.54
  • Strike Outs: 9.14

Why bet on the New York Mets?

The New York Mets have benefitted from the NL East being so tight at the moment, with no team seemingly able to take the bull by the horns there. Despite playing .500 ball at 14-14, the Mets find themselves in second place, just 2 ½ games off the pace in the division. Reds vs Mets is going to be a close one.

One of these teams is going to eventually go on a run, which means that the Mets need to start winning more consistently, especially at home, where they are just 5-7. They are not on a particularly good run of form at the moment, though, going 4-6 in their last 10 games. They will send Jason Vargas (1-1, 7.20 ERA) to the mound for this one.

Team Stats

  • Runs: 5.18
  • Hits: 9.00
  • Walks: 4.04
  • Strike Outs: 9.46

Defense

  • Runs: 5.89
  • Hits: 9.14
  • Walks: 3.93
  • Strike Outs: 9.57

Expert Pick & Final Score Prediction for Reds vs Mets

One of the things that you need to look at when wagering on baseball is potential pitching mismatches, which is what I think we are getting here. Castillo has been lights out for the Reds in the early going, so look for him to steer his team to another win.
